Recommended CPU for multiple video transcoding streams
I'm really gunning for having all my media available wherever I am, so to that end I'm looking for a server with enough CPU grunt to handle transcoding 3-5 streams of 720p video simultaneously; does anyone have any recommendations based on experience?
I'm intending to use Plex as the media server, if that makes a difference.

Why, do you watch multiple movies on multiple devices at the same time?
Seriously?
For porn?
GVH did have a 24 core plan, but I think it's gone. A Kimsufi i5 or even i7 will work well, I have used both before.
Well, seriously I have only two eyes and can watch only one movie at a time
Check the thread tags.
You didn't consider that people other than myself might be watching stuff too?
Ok, you have a point then
Why would you even mention GVH :-0
Can the i5's or i7's pull off realtime transcoding for multiple streams?
the G3258 is a perfect CPU for this. i use it on home server (i use full 1080p and cpu use is quite low)
Should be able to, I've got an i5 Kimsufi in Canada working pretty well. I could setup Plex and let you test it if you like.
Do you know anywhere that offers a server with this CPU? Can't think of anywhere I've seen it offered.
An actual test would be great, but only if you've got some other reason to set it all up, please don't go to all that trouble just for me :-)
We have G3220 servers, which is basically the same minus overclocking, but kimsufi would be cheaper.
I don't see anything on your site, what sort of spec/price?
plus alot slower single thread & dual thread performance.
@Nekki i don't know why you didn't see it - https://www.fitvps.com/p/39
Though as i said KS-3 would probably work for you and is cheaper.
Are you talking about the i5 or the G3220 here?
A lot slower? The results you see on www.cpubenchmark.net for G3258 is because it allows overclocking and overclockers like to show off with good benchmarks.

I dunno why I didn't see it either, unless it's something to do with only having had 2 hours sleep do to having to get up to have meetings on HK time.
yes a lot.
look at single threaded here http://browser.primatelabs.com/
even without overclock its nearly twice result
G3220
@TarZZ992 well look here - http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Pentium+G3258+@+3.20GHz&id=2267
Scroll to the bottom, there are results from the last 5 tests. There is one test that is an outlier with a score of 4998 that is skewing the average result. If you click on it http://www.passmark.com/baselines/V8/displayBaseline.php?id=35706263518
you will see that the CPU was running at 4.5 GHz on that test, which is clearly the result of overclocking.
i prefer a benchmark service with more detailed results such as geekbench
and? it's still faster as proved to you above, and single thread is better ^ plus the hardware is massively different.
@TarzZ92 yes, it's faster, but you don't overclock your servers. And without overclocking it is not "a lot" faster. Same CPU architecture and features , 200MHz clock difference (3 vs 3.2GHz when not overclocked) - how much faster can it be?
I've setup plex on a few i5 kimsufi's and nobody has has any issues, I'm not sure how many users are streaming though.
Give it a try and find out. as a OWNER of a G3258 i can tell you it's fast, and outperforms the the other said processor.
also G3220 is half the price so going to have a performance difference
Check PM @Nekki
Why don't you convert all your media to a format which does not need transcoding so that you and your clients can use the direct stream instead?
Also it might be worth to look for other solutions like Kodi which run all processes on the client side?
Basically, because I don't want to. I need a server regardless, so I might as well pay a bit extra and get a CPU that will save me the trouble. I'm also not sure there's a single format/batch of settings I can guarantee will play on everything without throwing the quality into the shitter (see below).
Not viable as the devices include a multitude of set-top boxes, smart TV's, phones, tablets erc/
I dont know if theres any CPU fitting your requirements in the link im about to share but they are just good dedicated server deals in the netherlands which is close to the UK (assuming you live there by judging on your previous comments.)
https://www.worldstream.nl/special.php?lang=en check their custom dedi's too.
