VMBox Review
I don't normally write reviews, but in this case i felt like i had to.
So i had a vps paid annually with vmbox just lying around with 50gb hdd and 3gb ram. I thought i would use it for something i had been working on, and while trying to do a yum update, it took around 10 minutes. This was way more than normal and even the worst vps i have ever had would respond faster than this. I dont normally believe in the dd io test, but i thought i would do that and i got around 20mbps on that. Did it multiple times and got around 40 max.
So i opened a support ticket, here is the screenshot:
The support guy claimed that he was getting better speeds on his side, and was arguing with me that he could not reproduce the speeds and was getting much better speeds on his side with dd tests. I tried multiple times throughout the day and max i could get was around 60. But the whole box felt really really really slow. Even something simple like yum install nano or something like that would take really long time.
Here are screenshots of my dd tests:
Anyways, I asked if they could move my box to a different node, and they flat out denied that. I am guessing they dont even have other nodes because it would be really easy to fit one box even if the boxes aready had a lot of vpses with openvz.
And their support guy told me to go buy a server with ssd if i wanted good speed. Instead of trying to help, he was claiming that the problem doesnt even exist in first place after i sent him many screenshots as proof.
Overall, ive never had worse experience with any other company.
Later i found out that they advertise in hackforums, so i guess that explains why their servers are slow. My suggestion would be to stay away from them.

mbps is megabits per second, not megabytes per second. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_rate_units#Decimal_multiples_of_bits
MBps is megabytes per second
Oh God, that color scheme in the client area...
50Mbps is slow? how much are you paying for this box.
Maybe other providers will give you superior numbers but that's adequate for a lot of things.
MBps or Mbps... either/or. For $2/m I'd take that. If you're paying $6/m then there's plenty others to choose from.
you're right, i have a habit of writing mbps
i normally wouldnt care if it was 50mbps and worked normally, but the vps feels sluggish as hell. doing simple things take forever at times. i have a box with another provider that gets 40MBps on dd tests, but i dont even care because it feels fine while using. and my problem was not only that the dd test showed slow speeds, but the support guy wasnt even trying to acknowledge that it was gettign those numbers
centos latest, i just changed it to ubuntu and things havent changed. its still slow
Yep, traceroute is your friend there.
@ksubedi Could you ServerBear it?
thats kinda what i thought at first too, but the ip pings are low and the routes are good. and the network is good too, i can wget files at almost full speed that the port supports
i got their new years deal i think it was 48/year if you paid yearly, but lot more monthly. i paid yearly but i guess you get what you pay for
and @noerman, im reinstalling os right now, ill do a serverbear after that.
the dd speeds have improved a little now i got 80 once. i made a script that does a dd test and retuurns the output on that server here : http://198.20.67.69/check.php . someone let me know if things start speeding up
@ksubedi .. that could soooo get abused.. just saying...
Kudos for keeping the review short and to the point.
i was thinking about making the script caching the results and only actually executing the command once every 30 mins or so if people wanted to check, but meh, if they dont have time to help me with my problems, i dont have time to spend on that either lol
I would suspend you for disk abuse if that would be happening here. I mean, a few tests are OK, but like that... It is almost DoS.
yeah it doesnt feel right hogging other user's io because it's the company that messed up. im gonna take the script down for now and put it back after implementing caching
Well, other then i think you should remove the script.. and VMBox should be able to tell there is a problem somehow in their infinite wisdom..
i ran the script once (but then again who knows how many others were doing the same too lol
i would too if i were a vps company. but my point here is i am not trying to argue with them just because i want to, their servers are actually slow and im not just making stuff up
ill just leave this here
update: like you guys were saying, my account got suspended, and i do deserve it. but i dont even care, that money was already down the drain and i couldnt even use the vps anyways, so i guess ill just have to be careful who to buy vpses from next time
Mbps is megabits per second too...
Just use MB/s.
more like "shitty providers don't allow me to have services with you".
i have vpses with almost 10 providers that advertise in let, and vmbox.co are the only ones whose services are bad enough that i thought it was worth posting it here. most let providers try to help you with problems and their servers work good, heck even gvh has gotten sooo much better now, but with vmbox its a different story, and i probably dont need to tell you why again
haha i feel like i need to take basic computer class again, i keep messing it up all the time
holy shit?? how did you thank yourself, i didnt even know that was possible lol
edit: oh, i feel like an idiot now haha
I thought it also used to be possible to thank yourself.
@perennate Try click this http://lowendtalk.com/plugin/thankfor/comment/494188?Target=discussion/22879/stay-away-from-vmbox-co-sluggish-vps-horrible-support
MBps and Mbps, it's one of those things that is so commonly miscommunicated it's difficult to take the terms at face value (particularly in the context of a forum like this).
Easy mistake to make.
Ergh, didn't know staff reply text was black. Thanks for posting OP.
you're welcome, thanks for your help, you guys have great support /sarcasm
