PsyBNC wont connect
Ive had PsyBNC running for about a month, no problems at all connecting to EFnet. Today i came on and it wasnt working, Server is still up i get this output when i connect
:User Exussum () trying irc.prison.net port 6667 (EFnet).
-psyBNC Thu Mar 22 22:34:19 :User Exussum got disconnected from server.
Nothing has changed (that i am aware of) this is the output i get
PING irc.prison.net (67.218.118.62) 56(84) bytes of data. ^C --- irc.prison.net ping statistics --- 5 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 4000ms telnet irc.prison.net 6667 Trying 67.218.118.62... Connected to irc.prison.net. Escape character is '^]'. NOTICE AUTH ** Processing connection to irc.Prison.NET NOTICE AUTH ** Looking up your hostname... NOTICE AUTH ** Checking Ident NOTICE AUTH ** No Ident response NOTICE AUTH ** Found your hostname
So it seems to be connecting ok but not responding to ping ?
22:38:27 up 31 days, 2:58, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00
The binary has been running for pretty much the whole time too. Memory usage is fine
Ive tried by IP as well incase it was an IPv6 issue.
Any ideas ?

try a different server besides prison? That thing runs some hellishly old IRCD anyways.
Francisco
So its not just EFnet ?
Restart psybnc? You know .. ps x .. kill -9.. etc
Try an SSL port maybe? it's quite possible your host is filtering some of the traffic
Francisco
Done that too. First did a rehash nothing worked, Then killed and restarted Same thing happens
@francisco if i can telnet on the hostname / port number that means the filtering cant be in place ?
I was thinking it's possible an IDS is filtering something else, not just the port directly.
Have you tried from irssi/bitchx?
Francisco
Few fast commands in case that you're not familiar with irssi
apt-get install irssi
To run irssi:
irssi or irssi -h IP/hostname (if you have more IPs)
/server yourircserver.com or /server -6 yourIPv6ircserver.com
/join #channel
ctrl + P to browse among channels
Installed and connected no problem though irssi
My psybnc conf file incase someone can spot something that shouldnt be there
Try to add IP instead hostname server to psyBNC. From some reason it happened to me on some psyBNCs more than once that I couldn't connect to irc server hostname but it work with IPs. It's worth to try.
/listservers
/addserver 67.218.118.62:6667
/addserver 213.232.93.3:6667
(first address is irc.prison.net and second holmes.freenode.net)
I really confused atm with it
USER1.USER.VHOST=EFnet
Wrong
-psyBNC Thu Mar 22 23:09:21 :User Exussum () trying 67.218.118.62 port 6667 (EFnet). <-- EFnet is not your vhost/IP
Changing to my IP and it still stays the same. Also it has connected before with that setting
copy/paste connection message again please because I noticed that you did it wrong also first time:
-psyBNC Thu Mar 22 22:49:50 :User Exussum () trying holmes.freenode.net port 6667 (exussum). <-- exussum is not your IP
or add IP properly:
/BVHOST yourIP
/jump
Modifed the IP slightly it is correct on psybnc though
I hope that you understand what I am saying. This simply couldn't work because from some reason you used "EFnet" and "exussum" as your own IP/address.
User Exussum () trying holmes.freenode.net port 6667 (exussum).
It's evidently also from your configuration file:
However if you use PROPER IP now and 85.*.135.167 (full, without *) is your real IP it should work now.
Deleted the config file and remade (make menuconfig) and working.
The vhost im using on the working one isnt real and it still works.
Thanks for the help !
Next time you don't need to go through "make menuconfig" process. Just paste first 3 lines to conf, run psyBNC, connect to it, add IRC server and you're done.
PSYBNC.SYSTEM.PORT1=66666
PSYBNC.SYSTEM.HOST1=*
PSYBNC.HOSTALLOWS.ENTRY0=* ;*
I am not buying that. You either use proper one or don't use any vhost/IP at all!
Ahh ok.
Most networks just ignore and do rdns, It can be used though (well ive not had a problem ?)
psybnc is awful.
znc is a good and easy way to go.
they have modules that you can load, go look on their wiki.
they even have a web interface so that you can do all the configurations and stuff in an easy gui.
woah, good old bnc days.
I highly recommend ZNC...
Derp.
Use ZNC pl0x
What makes znc better. I've had no problem with psybnc apart from this
This.
@exussum did you not read a word of what i posted?

psyBNC serve me well over decade and I don't have need to change that. I really don't care what is atm "hot" (sBNC, znc, whatever... oh and web interface for set up simple IRC bouncer, gosh...) as long psyBNC do it's job.
I don't know why psyBNC is awful? Maybe because it don't have new fancy features? Yeah, and some people use MSN and facebook chat with emoticons... but so what? And good and easy way to go? With my little script my psyBNC is up and runnin in few seconds. What else do I need?
I am not saying that all those new wanna-be-fancy bouncers are bad but there isn't anything to be fancy with old IRC and this old bouncer do it's job.
@kbar -yes i did, I have no problem with setting up stuff with the command line. Surely the extra stuff would run with extra memory ? I dont have a whole lot to play with on the box so if it uses more than psyBNC it is kinda pointless. I have no issues with the functionality either.
Because isn't developed anymore; without any developer bugs or security flaws are here to stay (for example the infamous psybnc's freeze bug).
I was used to run znc, with some modules, on a 64mb vps, along with a webserver and some other services. The memory usage is very low.
