Are there any free email options left?
I have been using my own mail server for a few weeks now but it is a point of failure. And I only send about 50 emails a month and receive less then 500 a month. Also nothing beats a spam filter from a dedicated company to it.
Are there any free mailbox options left? Gmail would be nice but I want to use my own domain. Also a possibility to backup my full inbox would be nice.

Have you seen - http://mxroute.com/
Just use the mail server on your cPanel hosting account (if you have one), then use IMAP to import to Gmail.
Can vouch for this, great service great interface, unless you're really really into Google...
Setup you own mailserver with Postfix/Dovecot and control it with Postfixadmin, it can be run on 64MB VPS.
Zoho mail?
Zoho mail is rock solid i recomend.
Mail2000.us (powered by mail.ru)
Yandex, to complete the list: https://pdd.yandex.ru/domains_add/
But you need to live with a domain admin panel that's in Russian
Decided to try Zoho mail, thank you
Yahoo, that's who I use and they do a very good job filtering out spam and spam alone
2nd'd
Get a Google apps associated domain and add licenses to your existing domain.
I would like to also vouch for Zoho's Business mail option; it's a rather solid service with a lot of integration options, all white-branded. They also have CRM and a lot of other nice features that you would expect if moving from Google App Engine / Google Mail Services.
