I've built some low energy Supermicro servers. But I did decide to not keep them at the attic, but put them in a datacenter, where they belong. I have one tower server at the attic, though. It has completely consumer hardware, but it still works 24/7 for 4 years already.
I know the server will wear out sooner because it is consumer hardware, not made to be on 24/7 and the attic isn't the best environment. But by time I need to replace it, I already want to replace it because I need more RAM or such.
