These are good cards, we use a few of them. Optics i would use FS.com
We are using these following Adapter for our VPS nodes
X520-DA1 Single 10GbE SFP+ (Only few have)
X520-DA2 Dual 10GbE SFP+ (Our most servers have this)
X540-T2 Dual 10GbE RJ45 (Only few on new nodes)
We are satisfied till now
X520 is a solid chip. Hard to go wrong with Intel NICs in general.
Yes, for low end hosting pretty much any intel NIC is good enough. In my dev lab I use Mellanox NICs and if I were really dead serious about total performance as well as some nifty features I'd get adapters from Chelsio (well noted, this is a dev and one in the IT security field speaking. For most people Mellanoxen are just as fine).
eBay.
Are you saying something like this good?

No, that's a 2nd generation card (while the current gen. is 5 and 6). But Connect-X 3 and 4 cards are fine and not too expensive e.g. on ebay.
