Honestly, if any one situation concerns you feel free to reach out to me. The truth is you're only going to get one side of the story, and when you attract a lot of people with approachable promotions you're going to get a lot of stories. Maybe they're legitimate stories about where we failed and learned. Maybe they're one-sided and lacking critical details (like the outbound DDOS they performed, the spam they sent, or the stolen credit card they used). The one thing that will be lacking every time will be us violating their privacy and offering a counter statement.

His "people saying they are bad" wasn't referring to DigitalOcean but rather to the many alternative providers he see mentions on the forum.

Lol, Contabo used to be terrible. It has supposedly gotten better but if something looks too good to be true, it probably is.

The only apparent reason is that every penny saved is a penny earned.

Yeah, you're probably right that this is the correct way to read the OP's post even if he didn't say this explicitly.

  • If you're looking for a similar VPS in EU, fastpipe.io could maybe fit your needs? In the US I'd recommend vapornode.com but there are many other good providers on LET, do your own research (forums, traceroutes, etc) and try the chosen ones for a couple of months to see if they fit your needs. Good luck!

    Hello,
I'm on the super tiny digital ocean VPS with 1GB ram and was looking at all the deals posted here. All of them look so good but when I look at the forum posts there are so many people saying they are bad for one reason or another. Any suggestions on a good reliable host? My main concern is reliability then cost.

    Thanks,
    wpc

Why do you need to leave? I recommend staying or simply go with Linode or Vultr or Scaleway or Upcloud or any other providers that don't use WHMCS + Solus/Virtuolizor and have their own custom control panel. This is the main reason how I categorize awesome vs typical hosting companies. Pricing-wise are basically the same depends on their locations.

  • wpcwpc Member

I was just looking at what was around and all these flashy deals posted here look so tempting with 2/3/4GB of ram which opens up a lot of options. . But yes I have not had any issues with DO and still use them for some business accounts.

Thanks for all the feedback, most seem to say stick with DO if I have not had any issues. I don't necessarily want to save money, just thought I could get a much faster VPS at the same cost.

I enjoy digitalocean. Stay with them if you want reliable, or Linode, AWS, and Azure. Do is cheap and reliable. I'm never been happier.

take a look at hostdoc. although not sure which location you need. if in doubt go for dallas gold

Edit: saw that location is LA. in that case UltraVPS(.eu). 6months now and still performing like day 1. everything good but take note they are dual disks - 10GB for main and additional for Data.

You can get one with more cores and/or more memory but the basic speed per core will be in the same general class. What is the application?

    just apache/php/mysql

  • For same quality, there are Vultr, Linode, maybe OVH. But last time I checked their pricing are almost identical.

I think you rephrased what I just said, sir. Except for the OVH part.

Any reviews about UpCloud's reliability please?

  • OP can probably find good yearly KVM deals in LA.
it's the old mecca for LEBs

Technically, more or less the same deoends on your target location. To me personally, what differentiate each providers are their custom front end and billing platform. The easier and user-friendly, the better. For example, to create/destroy or top up credit with just a few clicks away is like a dream come true for a lazy guy like me.

Not all DigitalOcean droplets are equal as they may have differing cpus powering them. Make sure you get one with newer Intel Xeon Gold Skylake cpus and you'd have excellent performance compared to many other VPS hosts who have yet to go the Intel Xeon Skylake route - yes some have but not all. See my DigitalOcean $5/month droplet benchmarks where there's a big difference and boost with Intel Xeon Skylake based droplets at https://community.centminmod.com/threads/digitalocean-us-15-month-droplet-benchmarks-intel-xeon-e5-2630lv2-vs-intel-xeon-gold-6140.16248/ :)

I liked their Chicago location, the only problem I had with them is that (and maybe it's changed or I missed it) there was no way to either have your vm turned off or bandwidth limited once you hit your bandwidth max (their overrage is $0.056/per GB so 1TB over is $56)

I've been looking for some but most have people on LEB with horror stories of cancellations for no apparent reason and good initial performance which drops to nothing when the boxes get oversold.

One thing LEB needs is a way for users to review each reseller that's posting deals.

it's been said sooo many times before but I'll say it again: LEB is good for one thing: a list of hosts to stay far far away from. (With very few exceptions). LET on the other hand may be a mixed bag of grizzled old farts and summerhosts, but at least you have a fighting chance of sorting the suckers out here.

That said, Virmach is one of the best cheap deals I've found anywhere - but you'll probably have to wait until Black Friday if you want their best prices. Normal price is a good deal too though.

As for right here, right now - a short list of hosts I've had good experience with in LA:

    • CrownCloud
    • HostHatch
    • LetBox
    • UltraVPS.eu

All decent providers of superior potassium.

If I had to pick one for uber-stability in LA I'd say UltraVPS.eu (just a guess based on a 6 month run with them a couple years ago. (I'm currently happy with some Virmach Black Friday specials along with storage deals from CrownCloud, HostHatch, and most recently LetBox so that's been enough for my LA boxen lately.)

I also like Freerangecloud in Fremont (though you'd want to be comfortable with Proxmox rather than a polished control panel, at least for the deal I got. The system and service itself has been quite reliable for me - it's one of my daily drivers.)

If Seattle might work for you then IonSwitch is a gem and has been rock solid with nice performance for me for a couple years now. Can recommend SubnetLabs and SpartanHost as well. Also might check SpeedyKVM.

Moving a bit farther inland in the western USA - InceptionHosting in Phoenix is reliable, performant, and quite affordable. Same goes for BuyVM in Las Vegas, and SpeedyKVM, HostDoc, and DrServer in Dallas.

Some of these have been in business longer than others, and there may be something to be said for that in terms of stability as well.

For me it usually comes down to location, matters of style (control panel etc.) and the deals offered. You pays your money and you takes your chances, but based on my experience with these providers so far I'd say the odds are pretty good you'll be as happy as with Digital Ocean while possibly saving a few bucks over the course of a year, if that's what you're looking to do.

  • If you don't care much about price, consider Amazon Light-Sail :)

Yes, but it is only available in a few locations - Nuremberg, Falkenstein (Germany) and Helsinki (Finland).

Hi! What you have written here may be a bit unclear.... Let me adjust your quote so that no misunderstandings appear.
Our Cloud is basically available everywhere in the world. We do have DC parks in Nuremberg, Falkenstein and Helsinki. That I can confirm.
