FS: 1x Inception BF2017 KVM256 PHX $8.83
Hi folks,
I have an unused KVM special from Inception Hosting that I'm willing to sell at-cost. The original offer post was part of the crazy BF2017 thread. It auto-renewed before I remembered to cancel it, so it's fully paid up until 24 Nov 2019, at which time it will renew for USD $8.29/yr; the discount code is recurring. I am charging slightly more to cover PayPal fees. I have checked with Ant and he's ok with doing a transfer.
It is a KVM in Phoenix at IOFlood, with 256MB RAM, 5GB SSD-cached disk, 500GB traffic, 1 IPv4 and no IPv6. I have experienced zero downtime in the past year; IH needs no introduction, and you all know Anthony runs an impeccable service.
You must be a current or past customer of Inception to be eligible for transfer. I would also like to limit it to folks who have been active here on LET for at least 3mo. It will not be first-come-first-served; I reserve the right to choose whom I sell to, or to withdraw the sale altogether. If you have an immediate, constructive use-case for this VPS and are willing to tell us a bit about it, I will take that into consideration.
I plan to leave this thread up for a day or so, depending on interest, and then select a winner. The winner will then PM me their email address on file with IH, I'll PM them my PayPal address, and upon receipt of payment I'll submit a ticket to do the transfer. Anthony has the right to deny the transfer for any reason; if that happens, I'll refund the money.
This was a rare deal from one of the best LET providers; I hope someone can make good use of it!
Best,
Sean

Hi. Interested and will take it if chosen. I do have a service with Inceptionhosting since 2014.
Might use this small KVM VPS to experiment with wireguard (not possible on OpenVZ). Will be ideal to serve that purpose.
That'd make a great nameserver. Unless someone else has a better use for it.
I would be interested if IPv4 is clean.
RELEASE THE IP. THEY ARE SCARCE!
still plenty of supply, just with higher prices
Thanks for all your responses so far! It's encouraging to hear some potential real-world uses. If you all don't mind, I'd like to leave the thread up for another day or so to give more folks a chance.
256MB is not a lot by modern standards, but the node is well-run, and it's enough to run Debian, nginx, PHP-FPM, PostgreSQL, a VPN, DNS, etc. I have a 64MB KVM with Virmach (which I'm not giving up), and that's tight enough that I can't even run a stock 64-bit kernel. Compared to that, 256MB is roomy.
Thanks for mentioning that; I hadn't thought to check. According to the Multi-RBL check, the IP is completely clean. I have no idea which RBLs are important, as I run all my mail through either GMail or MXRoute. If there are other lists you would like me to check, I'd be happy to.
Heh, yes that's the idea -- rather than me hogging a precious IPv4 for more idling, it'd be great to see it go to good use. Not to mention that the cost of the IP alone is more than the VPS, so surely Ant must be losing money on this.
Happy early BF to all!
Just worth mentioning, it is unmetered inbound BW
* Update: Torrents 'n porn.
More than enough room to install OpenBSD and compile your own kernel, though. NetBSD is a bit dicey.
Yep. I quite enjoyed the original LET spirit of doing all sorts of software tweaks to fit things into 128 or even 64 MB of RAM. I suppose for a similar exercise someone could try to run Gitlab on this!
So thus far akb, CyberMonday, and asv have expressed interest. Anyone else have an interesting project for this? If not, I'll pick from these three.
Wow...yeah I have a hard enough time getting certain things to work on a 256MB KVM nowadays so I can't imagine dealing with a 64MB KVM .
Thanks, @seanho - I'll defer my interest to someone who might actually use it for something. On another note, 64MB is less than most home routers these days, which is kind of sad.
You really need to pare stuff down. For instance, dropbear instead of OpenSSHD, getting rid of pointless getty entries, disabling junk that you really don't need like a local ntp daemon service, et al. That said, this beast is dual-stacked, and running actual services. Just not a hell of a lot.
Thanks for checking! All good.

2017 wasn't a great year for it. I agree it's less secure, but that's for another thread.
Yes, I usually only use dropbear in initrd for remote unlocking of encrypted root; after that, openssh all the way.
With that VirMach 64MB KVM, there's still swap, so no worries once I'm booted; the only problem is loading the kernel and initrd. I'm sure that's solvable, too; I just haven't put the time into it yet. The cool thing about that VPS is that the CPU is pretty snappy; the only real limitation is RAM.
I have something like this I can hand off too (InceptionHosting KVM in Phoenix from last year's BF, 512MB ram, 10GB disk, 10.50 euro/year = around $12). Great VPS, just idling too much. Expiration 11/27, I'll transfer it to first taker subject to Anthony's approval.
@akb, drop me a PM with the email address you use at Inception, and I'll send you my PayPal details, and you can get started on your WireGuard experiment!
@willie, feel free to use this thread for your KVM512; I can (ask a mod to) change the title to be more general, too. Or if you wanted to start a new thread, that's cool, too. Anthony had some amazing KVM deals last BF. It doesn't feel like this year is going to be quite as epic.
Cached or pure SSD? Please message me IP if you can.
Just setup your own dracut and prune the shit out of things, or stop using a top-heavy distribution.
Yep, on my Gentoo workstation I compile custom kernel and initrd, but for all the VPSes it's debian thx. It's been a while since I looked at the kernel on the 64MB KVM, but if I remember correctly it wasn't even able to load the kernel, let alone the initrd. Probably just need to custom compile the kernel; with only needed modules compiled into the kernel, I wouldn't even need an initrd.
Cached I believe. I'm not keen on revealing the VPS IP but maybe there is a test IP for the location (I'm not sure how to find it).
Yup it is cached, also 199.231.84.66
@CyberMonday , hey, your account tells "Last Active November 8" , which is strange. And i have pm'ed you 2 times but no replies... just asking if this can be a bug?
Just following up, the KVM256 has been sold to @akb.
I'm happy to leave the thread open for @willie and @asv if they like.
@ehab I only see the one.. and I replied. You cheeky git!
@CyberMonday i feel better when you pm'ed, get that activity and "thanks link" for your account fixed.
anyway,,, have fun.
@wss logged in while he was banned.
we can blame @deank for everything-
As far as I can tell, the feature 'Last Active' is partly broken.
Also, the feature for the number of discussions shown for a user is partly broken. In my case, it shows "11" discussions, but I've only opened 5 discussions.
