It's been a godsend in both production and development servers alike. We use it to track changes to not only what updates break, but also changes to /etc/hosts, /etc/fstab, and other files that developers may mess around with during development.
I'm using it on all my servers. It works very nice and is very useful when you need to find out what you've installed/deinstalled recently. When configed to automatically push changes also to remote repository, you can have another backup copy of the configuration.
Thats what I like about it, you can choose what VCS you will use and if you know how to work with the VCS, you can do almost everything.
yes, exactly it works perfect with git for me.
