Anyone who gets one of these, take heed (for those who don't want to wade through 13 pages of hints):

Ensure BIOS is at least from 2011; this one is fine:

    [ 0.000000] DMI: Supermicro H8SMI/H8SMI, BIOS 080014 01/10/2011

    Get a spider (KVM) installed.
Mash F1/DEL/F12, whatever to get into the BIOS.
    Set ACPI to v3.0.
    Set MPS to v1.4.
    Set ISA window to 64k.
Set IOMMU to (256MB or) 1G.

Install your choice of OS; enjoy a recent kernel.

Cool. The problem is I still didn't manage to get one. xD

They had a $20 unit with 4G (4x1TB) that was marked as a 2x1TB. They seem to have fixed that already.

I am monitoring that one actually but seems to be odd as description and specs isn't same. also free upgrade for /29. They pulled out few minutes ago I think.

Most of them come with a /29 if you can justify use.

extra $4 on some servers there. Not sure why some are free.

Same reason that they come with 10TB, but upgrading to either 20TB, or 100Mbit/unlimited is an extra $5 (possibly 33TB/mo).

Is any of this actually necessary? The two I have say their BIOS is from 2009, I didn't adjust any of the BIOS settings and installed ubuntu server 16.04 fine.

Actually this one says "empty" for the vendor lol:
    [ 0.000000] DMI: empty empty/S2925, BIOS 'V2.01 ' 07/01/2009

Not if everything works fine. If you're getting tons of IOMMU errors in your dmesg, then- Yes, yes it is.

You've got a Tyan motherboard, which is an entirely different beast.

I don't seem to have any on my first one, second one I just got today has this:

    dmesg|grep -i iommu
[ 0.000000] AGP: Please enable the IOMMU option in the BIOS setup
    [ 0.887925] PCI-DMA: using GART IOMMU.
[ 0.887933] PCI-DMA: Reserving 64MB of IOMMU area in the AGP aperture
[ 9.739468] AMD IOMMUv2 driver by Joerg Roedel
[ 9.792299] AMD IOMMUv2 functionality not available on this system

I vaguely recall AMD having a lot of IOMMU related bugs in Linux.

You've got a Tyan motherboard, which is an entirely different beast.

    My first one I got a while back has the [ 0.000000] DMI: empty empty/S2925, BIOS 'V2.01 ' 07/01/2009 one I just got today is a Supermicro it seems: [ 0.000000] DMI: Supermicro H8SMI/H8SMI, BIOS 080014 08/11/2009

You're welcome for the above. Check your dmesg after you start installing things and it is so damn slow, then you find that it is shitting itself. :D

I noticed the new supermicro one hang once or twice in the installer, but haven't seen anything wrong in the OS yet, were those IOMMU messages I posted the errors you mentioned? Doesn't seem that error-like yet.

If it shits itself, you'll know. If it doesn't, your BIOS is fine.

100s of us are waiting for such thing to happen. But even for SW, that doesn't last few minutes.

He was asking for a Hardware Raid for <$30? Insanity..

The dual 5140 is HW RAID w/ 4x146SAS, but you're going to end up with less than 300GB, and the CPU isn't even 3k passmark. You'd probably do just as well waiting for the 2x2+4x1 to return.

  • the network it's good, i think 10 TB not enough for me, just upgrade to 20TB..

Go for the 1835 over the 1356; slightly better performance. By that, I mean, it's still a turd, but there's a peanut in it.

  • available now Supermicro 6-bay Opteron 1385 8GB 2x2TB Rent Only Special (Bonus 4TB FREE). Maybe someone need that.

  • Whoever got my last 1835, don't bother trying to KVM it and split into different storage VPS; it's unstable, annoyingly so. It idles just fine, though. Good luck!
