Replace Crashplan with VPS?
Hello all,
I was wondering what your thoughts would be on backing up my server to a 250gb or 500gb VPS instead of using Crashplan as I currently am. Would this be a good idea or not? Would my data be as secure? Could/should I encrypt all the data I upload? It would just be music and pictures and personal stuff.
Thanks for your help ahead of time!

How expensive is your crashplan?
about 50 per year for unlimited, I only use about 200 gigs.
I'm open to paying more for more security/control over the backup system.
I think 50/year is a very decent deal for unlimited storage
There are a few of us who offer storage boxes.
Here is our offer
1vCpu
512 MB Ram Gauranteed
250 GB Space
1250 GB bandwidth
1 IPv4
14.95 p/m

But there are folks like ramnode and a few others that also offer them.
@darknessends - I agree. Not looking to replace it for my laptop, but possibly for my server.
Would a VPS work better for backups since I can stream with owncloud?
that would work just fine. What type of price range are you looking?
I was looking into Backupsy from @serverian
$5p/m for 250gb with 1000gb/m bandwidth and 512 ram.
like I said that is a good plan.
I can do 250Gb for $5
Located in Dallas Tx
Couldn't find if the drives are setup in raid 5 or 60 but hopefully raid for backupsy 60

RAID 50 with Seagate Constellation drives.
@Fliphost beat me!
I guess i didn't look verry hard.
@bcarlsonmedia for the price backupsy sounds awesome.
You could still use CP with your own VPS for a backup destination. Just "backup to a friend" and be your own friend.
The CP interface is pretty nice and feature-full, so you could have the best of both worlds.
Not sure if this is what was implied, but you can run the Crashplan software headless on Linux. I backup my PC and my parent's computers to two storage VPSes like this.
No one using rsync anymore?
Sure, where appropriate.
@bcarlsonmedia
I'm using CrashPlan on a LEB to backup all my data. CrashPlan themselves offer excellent prices but its more fun doing it yourself. CrashPlan encrypts everything using a custom key that you can set so pretty secure.
@Fliphost what kind of specs are you offering? Gigabit or 100mbps?
@jack same here, just thinking of moving primary to a VPS instead of Crashplan Central.
@bcarlsonmedia
100mbps default $2 per month upgrade to 1Gbps
