Provider Challenge

edited January 2012 in Providers

Hey Providers, post here if you have the guts.

http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1115714

LowEndAdmin: Good to fill the info here. Challenge at WHT, from user "Unsuuure":

I challenge all providers to post a page showing their nodes online/offline status, including each node's uptime.

Feel free to post at WHT or here.

Comments

  • If you don't post here, you probably have something to hide.

Takes 2 seconds to fake a status page.

And 99.9% uptime guarantees are usually worthless in many people's eyes. Too many providers have too many escape clauses in their guarantees.

    It's just marketing.

  • @drmike said: Takes 2 seconds to fake a status page.

Maybe, but those that fake uptime can have users calling them on it and foreva' be known as liars. :)

  • @Naruto said: foreva' be known as liars

If that would be true we wouldn't have so many complaints here. The truth is: their discredit would just last until they make their next $10/year-offer and everybody would be jumping at the opportunity.

  • @drmike said: It's just marketing.

i lost a couple of $$ while our NL DC had an issue last month. :P

  • As many notifications that we've been sending out this month about instability and things being down, I'm sure our users have a pretty good idea that our uptime is sucking right now.

I don't know what I, or anyone else here, would really have to gain by posting it on WHT. Except to gain "infractions" for self-promotion...

  • Can you get infractions in a thread that requests the individual providers to show their uptime pages?

  • Probably. Adam received an infraction for posting an offering in a thread that was asking for offerings. It appears to be 100% dependent on the mood of die Aufseherin that day.

  • I think this thread is a bit different. They shouldn't count this. We'll see.

I mean, it is a challenge... I'm calling them out.

  • Doesn't BuyVM already have this?

    buyvmstatus.com/

  • @dclardy said: Doesn't BuyVM already have this?

Yup, though it's not 100% accurate, and not "official" (ie - our staff hasn't even seen the code for that site, we just provide them with relevant IPs). Though we won't hesitate to hand out the link should someone ask.

  • @dclardy said: Doesn't BuyVM already have this?

    buyvmstatus.com/

"This site is not operated by, sponsored by or affiliated with BuyVM in any way. Information may be inaccurate."

Still, a page like that is what I'd like to look at before making a purchase. They should post in that WHT thread. :)

  • I have a sneaking suspicion that the thread's OP is an alternate account for one of the providers. Smells like bait to me, not touching that one with a 10-foot pole.

I also posted in the AlienVPS 12+ hours downtime thread in their defense and on http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1113846&page=3

If what you say is true, I must work for AlienVPS too. I don't. If I worked for somebody, I'd also have to know commonly used linux commands used in checking performance. I don't. I have the cpu info command and the cachefly one saved in a notepad. I also purchased from VPS6.net, but someone suggested I worked for them too in the LET thread posted just above. I don't, otherwise I wouldn't have made that thread. Unless I work for AlienVPS and VPS6 and we're trying some new publicity stuff by attracting attention and then fighting off the accusers to encourage that people try us out... but if that were the case I'd want paid for my services. No one pays me. :(

  • Aah, that's you? My apologies for the assumption then, sir ^_^

I will refrain from commenting in that thread, though. Not out of mistrust of you, but after Fran's latest infraction on WHT we're not gonna take any chances :P There is the aforementioned http://buyvmstatus.com page, though, which is the closest we have to a public-available status list.

buyvmstatus is nice but since it uses amazon it's a little quirky. I've seen cedr's bot dump offline a few times while no one else peers so it's likely a flood/etc that amazon eats for a few.

Still, vld did an excellent jerb.

It's cool. I'm just a provider-slut, bangin' VPSes and telling when people are nice to me.

I figured you'd have been busy filling 800 episodes of anime in Japan

  • If I made an Off Topic discussion asking "Who is Tobi?" I wonder how many people would even understand... and if they did, oh man. That would be a huge discussion.

We have had a few DDoS attacks this month :( But its still there in all its honesty, i really need to change the pingdom check time though since it only checks every 15 minute at the moment so if the server doesn't respond for whatever reason when checked it clocks the downtime as 15 minutes, when really it could have been seconds.

  • @VMPort said: ...since it only checks every 15 minute at the moment so if the server doesn't respond for whatever reason when checked it clocks the downtime as 15 minutes, when really it could have been seconds.

And 14 mins, 59 secs of downtime could possibly go undetected... :)

    Check every 5 mins :D
And we do not offer 99.9% uptime guarantee just 99%

And even with real uptime and load average

  • @jenok Damn, that Taiwan location really sucks!

This is LET, not WHT. So why should providers have to go to another forum?
Why wouldn't you just encourage them to post here in 1 single thread?

It would also be more focused, LEB providers compared to other LEB providers.

    Thanked by 1marrco
  • @Joel -- thanks for the report. I think OP was only trying to notify the community about a specific post on WHT. If you are a low end provider feel free to post them here as well.

  • By all means feel free to post them here too. I am sorry I forgot you can't post on WHT, Joel. Not picking favorites by all means. I could have made the discussion here and linked in WHT but they are more strict there. LEA seems like a cool guy who doesn't afraid of anything.

My opinion: post on both if you got the uptime/guts. It would be funny if someone made a fake provider and used a .info domain real quick and posted a page showing all nodes down. That can be something only us at LET would be in on. WHT-only people would be all wtf lol

  • @Naruto said: It would be funny if someone made a fake provider and used a .info domain real quick and posted a page showing all nodes down.

Admittedly, that would be a rather amusing way to troll WHT. Especially if a few people praised the 'provider'. I imagine if the mods don't lock that thread, though, it'll be a useful resource for someone that's looking for a new host; it wouldn't be quite fair to consumers to waste their time on a bogus hunt.

  • Call it dannfrynetworks.info or something.

  • The online/offline might matter but the uptime listed wont, someone could have just done a update and it needed a restart.
