Attn: Amazon Permanently locked a Cloud Drive account for "abusing" bandwidth
Just stumbled upon this article... the user's ACD was permanantly locked out for going over (un)specified network bandwidth.
I'm not an Amazon Cloud user myself but I read here alot many consider it as a Backup and use it extensively for being unlimited. So beware... there is a big catch
They locked my account while I was backing it up to Google Drive.
I emailed support and they unlocked it. About an hour later it was locked again. They refuse to unlock it over email and are making me phone in.
Apparently I violated the TOS by downloading at a higher rate than average users. (basically everyone on this forum is or has done the same)
He has to discuss with his manager what he can do about it....
He just came back saying its a permanent suspension and he wont unlock it.
So, they took $60 from me about 2 weeks prior.
They are the only ones that have my files in their cloud, as they were in the process of being duplicated.
Now the files are permanently locked and flagged for deletion.
Just a heads up to everyone - DO NOT GET AN ACD ACCOUNT!!!!!!

Yeah you can use as much storage as you want, but once you start downloading it all again Amazon will lock the account. TL;DR Uploading is fine, Downloading is not
There's a reason that ACD is no longer part of Plex Cloud after being the pilot platform. Maybe related...
If they operated a service like that here in my country they would get fucked. Especially if they don't state any limits clearly on the site.
"Downloading more then an average user" just wouldn't hold up.
On behalf of @WSS:
Fuck Bezos!
Well, thats what I said before, if you are higher then average you be fucked.
Not true in my case. Pulled down 40tb of stuff in a day or two 'n I'm still rolling on fine.
Old
Also pulled down 25TB~ of files from ACD in the space of two days not that long ago and didn't get banned, just did the same for another 3TB today and no ban.
You are not affecting others or may not crossing the set limit while downloading . I think they set with 95 percentile .
I should add this was at average 4Gbps (Gbps, yes), so eh I have no idea what Amazon are banning for.
From that forum posting:
...followed by...
So Amazon closed an unlimited account holding terabytes of
torrented copyrighted mediacarefully curated Linux ISOs and.... this is surprising how?Damian I see how it got banned we love Linux isos .
I can't even imagine that much porn.
Woah, man. Everyone's needs are different. Haters gonna hate.
have a feeling this was more of an api limit issue. The guy said he had a cron job running in his reddit thread, maybe he misconfigured it and it was beating the hell out of their api.
Maybe it was an expression of awe-filled respect...?
Maybe it was grudging respect coming from a place of deep jealousy?

We replicate our backup NAS to Amazon Cloud Drive and have done for a little while now.
14 Day Retention locally and 4AM every morning a server running 'StableBit CloudDrive' then copies all the new data encrypted in 20MB Chunks to ACD.
It's not a disaster if we lose the backups that are stored at ACD it's just simply an archive for a 'Just in-case' especially if the NAS was to completely fail.
Hm, guess they never intended this product to be used in a business environment with such high usages for that kind of a price. :P
Regarding the locked account mentioned in the OP: As long as nobody knows really what happened, I would not be nervous about this. It should require quite some abuse to trigger a red light at an Amazon office.
And I wouldn't consider sorting out a few of those extreme "Linux ISO" guys a completely bad thing...
Give us all your data....for keeps. Thanks. k bye.
Besides storing photos with their mobile sync app, I struggle to understand the actual intended use case for Cloud Drive. I have it, I just still don't get it. The fact that they don't make a Dropbox-style client suggests to me that they want you to be intentionally uploading files by directly selecting them from your desktop computer. I just can't think of the use case where that is convenient. I have to wonder if they struggle with understanding the intended use case as well.
I feel like I could better defend their interests in conversation if I better understood how they envision the product. They don't do themselves many favors there.
It's Amazon!! Use it the way it is or stfu, or so they think.
What do you mean by this? It works just like Dropbox on my computer...
Actually I just installed the new client, it has a sync folder now. Okay, so they are moving toward Dropbox in product.
It does clearly state 'Personal' storage, however it was one of those shower ideas in a wonder if it would actually work. Turns out, it works much better than expected.
That's why I trust in my Google drive unlimited.
Twice the price but totaly worth it
I find this somewhat unsurprising - it was only a matter of time, and will only be a matter of time before they start capping their unlimited storage with some pretty stringent fair use policies.
Whatever... this is an unscrupulous move by an enterprise company. I feel rather than having a blindfolded lock down on the account, you should warn and wit the customer to buy a limited package instead... or offer something more feasible on both sides.
Another decent option would be to allow download only and restrict any uploads so that the user can atleast pull out his data and wash off his account before a deletion is scheduled.
Abruptly locking down a user's account is more like being a summer host, doesn't fit Amazon's name
Downloaded 14-15TB of files after a HD failure not long ago for some personal stuff without any issues.
