Back up what and to where?
rsync is a good option
tar zcpvf - /local_src_dir | ssh user@host "cat > /rmt_dest_dir/backup.tar.gz"
ssh --stage 1 --prepare --source /local_path/to/site | ssh --stage 2 --commit $remoteserver:/path/to/storage
Adjust as necessary.
tar and scp is all you need
Please tell me step by step. Please
@2014 Familiarize yourself with rsync: https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-use-rsync-to-sync-local-and-remote-directories-on-a-vps
Check out http://www.tecmint.com/linux-system-backup-tools/
There are some example scripts here that you can use: https://rsync.samba.org/examples.html
They might be better then the other guides if you just want to implement without actually understanding what rsync does.
If you don't know anything about Linux, backing up data, then you shouldn't have a VPS/server. If I were you I would go with a shared hosting provider that has backups. BuyShared is one of them, you can create backups whenever you want.
