.edu is a special use TLD and those domains are only for accredited institutions. You can't just sell or transfer them away to just anyone. Even the small handful of grandfathered .edu domains can't even be traded or sold away from the original registrant. Presumably, one day grandfathered .edu names will eventually cease to exist once the registrants either relinquish the name or some short time after their demise.
