If you're not having any problems no. If you can't justify the costs for the use any longer then yes.
If you decide to move, make sure to vet your new provider. DigitalOcean is stable and won't give you any issues. Ensure the same can be said for anyone else you move to.
I'd counter that to say DO won't give you any issues beyond what might be standard risk if your application sits on a single server. Hardware failures are always a risk, for example. Now, it is true we'd be less likely to run away than a one-man show. That said, there's some pretty amazing hosts here that started as a one-man show. Just think about RamNode and Hostigation, for example.
Make the choice that fits you best, but my advice is don't be the person who always hops around to the best deal just to save a buck. Do your research and make the right move, or don't make a move. If Option A comforts you more at night over Option B, choose whichever one makes you sleep better
(Full disclosure: I work for DigitalOcean)
I think DigitalOcean has been very good for a lot of people I know but if you are moving, be sure to do more research about the new provider.
I would stay where you are if you are happy. I have invested too much time on smaller hosts. The deals are often too good to be true. DO is solid and reliable. Stay
Now, there are some other smaller hosts that deserve respect and honor for the services they provide... I am just a little jaded right now about picking smaller hosts and then having to move stuff. I like sleeping at night. The best host is the one you never need to think about.
Is RamNode a one man show now? I could never really tell where they are as a company, though I have heard nothing but stellar things about them.
Not quite, but it once was. It was as glorious as a one-man show as it is today.
Wow. If i remember correctly, you are also an administer of LET, and also an administer of mxroute.
Based on your experience with DO, it only give more credibility to mxroute : you know how to manage infrastructure.
Not everyone feels that way, and it's okay, but I appreciate that. I love this industry and my customers in everything that I do
The only reason why I considered the move, is that scalaway and ovh offer more memory (1GB vs 512MB) for less.
How are they comparing to the DO?
Another downside of DO is inability to run latest kernel. But it seems they resolved it already, so only consideration is memory for the smallest instance.
OVH's SSD VPS line is solid and is a lot of bang for your buck (great performance, uptime, and ddos protection).
Migrations are messy no matter how you look at it. Unless you are having a fiscal hardship, stay put unless DO stops suiting your needs.
Also consider vultr : Pricewise, their lower end is 768 MB ram instead of 512 like digital ocean. 50% more ram for the 5$ plan. Vultr got better performance than digital ocean, at least, from most benchmark I saw. Why? Vultr is more recent, and thus their infrastructure has more recent hardware. On the other side, its been a while digital ocean is there, and thus they got solid infrastructure. CPU wise, maybe 10-15% faster, but on the network side, they got less latency. I cannot explain why. Digital ocean got more feature, and their promotional credit don't expire after 60 day like vultr.
I signed up for DO using a promo code and they sent me the most obnoxious ID demand I've ever seen:
I declined to send such a picture, so no DO for me. I have 3 ramnode VPS, half a dozen other VPS from other providers including OVH, dedicated servers at Hetzner and Online, etc. I can live without DO.
Agreed!, the 5$ Vultr rocks. Also, Vultr will price match up to $100. And Vultr will automatically add $5 to your account for signing up. So the first month is free (pretty awesome). Also, Vultr's locations are pretty good (at least for the locations I want).
The only major negative for me is that Vultr is they still dont have pooled bandwidth, or the ability to bulk buy bandwidth in advance.
So what you're saying is that you really don't have any advice for the OP's request.
OP, you can certainly get more machine resources for less money from LET vendors, so you basically get to decide whether you care about a couple of saved dollars. Also even if you think there's a reliability difference (maybe there isn't), how big a deal is it to you if your RSS briefly goes offline once in a while?
I've never felt the need for something like DO. Low end services have been working fine for me. The one attraction of DO/Linode/Vultr is hourly billing, if I want to spin up something temporarily. I sometimes use Scaleway for that, which has some minuses like being in EU (more latency) and having slow (but numerous and cheap) Atom or ARM cores.
OVH: Cheaper, 16 IPv4
DO: More locations, IPv6
OVH's SSD-VPS has 2GB and it's great. The main drawback is the 10GB disk allocation is on the small side. But it's the snappiest VPS I've ever had, and I got it for $1.75/month (for 1 year) on black friday special. Even at $3.50/month it's great. BuyVM 1GB slice is also $3.50/month and has more SSD storage space. Not to bag on DO except for that ID picture thing but but there's all kinds of options to choose from.
Why just need stick with DO there a lot of other better and cheaper providers.
Do you really need more resources? Are you satisfied with the performance of your current droplet? If so, then why move?
Migrating is time consuming hassle IMO, if it ain't broke don't fix it
I moved away from DO to Vultr so far I feel they are better value for money with same quality.
If it works and you're happy with the service for the price you pay then why move? If not then of course, look elsewhere but do your research before moving. You may find the extra 1GB of memory that you won't ever utilize costs you reliability in the long run. Overall - if you don't need more transfer, memory and such is it worth the hassle of migration and re-configuring everything one more?
If you feel you will need more horse power on your VPS then by all means go for it but make sure you keep regular backups regardless of who you're with - be it DigitalOcean, Vultr or some other provider.
Until you need support. But who needs support anyway.
DO NOT MOVE!!! @jarland's there
luv sucking up to mods too
I think you should stay if the service is good to you so far.
I'm using DO for 3 years and so far so good.
But the main reason why i'm using Do now is the Affiliate program they has.
I have more then 1k referred people so one in a while commissions flow to my account
I've tried Vultr in the past and left right away, after they decided to rebuild my VM after I configured it (something to do with a failure), so I lost all (actually none) of the data, but it was bad sign.
I'll have a benefit of more ram, and setting up -- it's not a big deal, as it's all scripted. So there is nothing holding me at DO.
Thanks for great discussion, will definetly try OVH (too bad they only have two geo-locations France and US, but for testing not a huge deal.
I think DO is best cloud VM provider out there but if you don't like because of pricing then you can get just double resources from InterServer at almost same pricing and you can use GRABPENNY coupon to get it at $0.01 for first month.
That is no good. When did this occur, recently or when they first opened their services? But it is a good reminder that hardware failures can and do occur on any service. Backup backup backup! And Vultr has free snap shots, which have easy api integraiton. Just run an automated curl api command via cron, and it will backup your data each night. This backup snapshot is stored on a different drive.
To be honest I found there support really good.
The same could happen at DigitalOcean or any other host, but it seems to happen more often at Vultr, I experienced the same as well. They also remain silent about hardware raid and if they use raid at all. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't. That would explain the failures that happen so frequently.
For me DigitalOcean is still way more reliable, so if you are happy at DO I would suggest you to stay. I have machines there for some clients I created websites for 3 years ago that still run and run with zero downtime so far.
