Can you help me to know if there is something wrong with these disk? What values should I care?
I see Raw_Read_Error_Rate and Multi_Zone_Error_Rate in the first disk are greater than 0, but both disks say No Errors Logged.
Thank you for your help.
Comments
Hi,
Both drives are in excellent condition. I would not worry about Raw_Read_Error_Rate and Multi_Zone_Error_Rate in this case.
The last article I read about this cryptic stuff: https://www.backblaze.com/blog/hard-drive-smart-stats/
The drives are in good condition and they have no errors.
You should be worried if the "Reallocated_Sector_Ct" is greater than 0. In this case forward it to your provider.
You should also monitor "Seek_Error_Rate ", "Current_Pending_Sector", "Offline_Uncorrectable".
My general approach to reading smartctl data: look for any value that is moving towards its threshold (being a non-round number is a good indication). Then ignore every runtime/performance-related metric (spin-up time, temperature, power-on hours, etc).
For anything that's left after that, you should probably start being concerned. Especially the reallocated sector count is an indication that your drive is going bad, but you'll want to look at how the value changes over time.
If you're running critical stuff on your system, it's a good idea to start replacing your drive as soon as you see reallocated sectors. If it's less critical stuff (swap file, torrents, whatever), you can pretty much just wait until it hits the threshold.
If your drive has a "G-Sense Error Rate" property or something similarly named, and it keeps increasing over time, there may be something wrong with the environment of your drive - this is essentially "shock detection", and it could suggest that your drive is not mounted properly, or that the device it's in is being dropped a lot. Spinning rust doesn't like vibrating too much
Also, a few things to consider:
a) Assuming you have email setup on the server, try to run smartd so that it will notify you on disk issues. (see /etc/smartd.conf).
b) Some useful things to setup correctly:
Look at the Temperature (39 in the above dump) and how much it varies by on average and setup a warning if it goes above a threshold (say 45). See the -W flag in smartd.conf
Consider running an offline test every day at some odd hour (-s O/../.././03 will run one every day after 0300 AM localtime).
Other useful options are the -a and -p
You can also consider scheduling a cron job to run short and extended offline tests regularly to keep tabs on the disk.
(of course man smartd.conf will help).
If you pay attention to email, and things are running nicely, you'll get notified when attributes 197 and 198 start to increase (which is when you really have to start to consider migrating disks). At other times, smartd is really nice and quiet.
HTH.
A lot of people are getting confused with SMART. Some drives even increase that because lines liek "raw read error" are stored in hexadecimal format. Lines show hexadecimal data may look like a high error rate, but it's not.
Al already mentioned in this thread, both your drive appear to be in healthy state.
Fields to keep an eye on are mainly;
Thank you all, I'll take your advices.
I'm going to try configuring smartd.
And maybe also refer to the latest one published today: https://www.backblaze.com/blog/what-smart-stats-indicate-hard-drive-failures/
Oh, wonderful! Let's read...
