Hello,

I need a VPS KVM or XEN for using Plex and Transmission (private torrents download), with a minimun specs: 500gb HDD, Dual-core and 2gb RAM and a fast internet.

So far Contabo is the best that i have founded:

VPS-M: 500gb SSD cached, 6GB ram, 2 cores: 7.99€

my max budget is 10€/month.

then use kodi... no need to run plex.
    then your budge makes sense.

    [remote]
    get box, load transmission

    [home]
download kodi, connect via sftp or ftp, and start watching

Buy a dedicated server from Kimsufi.

Only go for one month @ contabo.
Their services are hit or miss. You either get a nice unused node or a complete oversold one. They also dont like to move you.

Thats a good idea, but i need Plex because me and my brother we use Plex, he uses in a Samsung TV with Plex.

  • I see.
I'd say kimsufi ks-1 if you can get it.
Time4VPS is fine as well because you won't be encoding anything
and plex doesn't use all that much cpu

Thanks mate, do you think that will have enough power for Ubuntu and Plex and Transmission?

  • @BTN said:

    no encoding = no cpu
    2g ram is fine.

how many files are you going to track on tramsission?

  • BTNBTN Member

Not to many, 4~6, they will be active in Transmission, only 24h.

  • SSD Cached? Why not hw RAID 10?

KVM on a VPS for torrenting is just increasing costs with no benefit and a possible performance hit.

So what do you recomend for me?

Single disk dedicated server if you can up the budget a bit, or at a push a cheap OpenVZ VPS - for $10 a month you can get a 200GB disk 1GB RAM RamNode VPS.

  • KS-1 doesn't have enough horsepower for plex. I've tried and it could not keep up.

Do you have a good alternative?

  • @BTN said:

Not really. I setup a desktop with centos with an i3 processor in my office at work on a 100Mb uplink. (Shhhhh!)

At the time i have a 2 core, 1gb ram and 120GB HDD for 36€/year at Prometeus, and it works very well, but i need more disk.

Was that with encoding? OP said he wasn't doing any encoding so it might just work?

Sure without encoding (direct play) should work fine. But I had a terrible time getting it to direct play. I even tried transcoding to the exact codec and container they say is supported for direct play and it would still sometimes encode it. With an i3 it doesn't matter if that's the case or not...

  • If that's all your using the box for, you may as well just get the £10 plan from Feralhosting.

Okay it's a tiny bit over your budget, but it's rock solid and you get 1TB of storage with it.
Encoding isn't an issue, I regularly re-encode 30mbit video streams down to 18mbit to deal with crappy university wifi without any issues.

We've been running a business since 2008, in Portugal, but recently, we created backupinstance to the international market. :-)
