VPS to host some important stuff
I'm in need of one VPS to host some of my personal stuff. This is content which hasn't been migrated in years, the setup is a bit complex and I don't want to move ISP each six months.
Minimum specs:
- Full virtualization, not OVZ.
- RAM: 256MB
- HDD: 8GB
- Bandwidth: 500GB
Requirements:
- Reliable ISP which I can trust. I prefer stability above everything else.
- Location: North America and Europe are fine, no latency sensitive stuff is hosted.
- DDoS protection is desirable but not a requirement as long as the ISP can auto nullroute and won't instantly kick me.
- There is some controversial stuff hosted, including porn and drug related content. So I would prefer to avoid some European countries.
I have some options in mind: LeaseWeb, iwStack, or even ProviderService. I don't need enterprise service, but anything less than let's say RamNode is not acceptable, I need a established provider.
Considering the current options, I would say the budget is about 5€/month. Can you guys think of some other provider which I could be interested in?
Comments
iwstack (€ 2.736/mo)
BuyVM ?
Any reason why you're not going with the options you have in mind?
Its cheap yea, but you need to put in like 30EUR + TAX.
Already listed
I would prefer RamNode, but thanks.
I know, not really a problem. Thanks anyway for noting it.
BuyVM, Ramnode or if you really want the reliability, Linode has always been awesome.
Ugh, no. Not a chance.
Edit, to explain: they've been hacked like... 5 times that are known? And they withheld a lot of information from customers about those incidents. Word out there is that they were hacked again months ago and didn't say anything until last week or so.

keep in mind the VAT costs, its gonna be a little bit over the 5 euro budget
Wouldn't be a problem, but I don't really know if I can trust them. Some of their prices don't look cheap considering the datacenters they have presence in. And for the same price and no DDoS protection, I guess I would go with LeaseWeb.
Thanks anyway.
My Charlotte NC location does not have DDoS protection, but does auto null if you are drawing attacks, and as long as your content is legal, I have no issue with it. I think I meet your other requirements, 256mb KVM with 10GB SSD and 500gb traffic is $4.20/mo with 30OFF4LIFE 30% coupon

I recommend them because you appeared to be looking for a reliable host you can count on. the guy behind liteservers is really great! and their services are just like that.
If you expect DDoS attacks then its always better to go with an provider that has protection in place for that, i dont think liteservers will kick you out for getting attacked but it shouldnt happen too frequently.
@miTgiB looks interesting, thanks.
I've seen you around here from time to time but didn't really know much about Hostigation. Do you own the network at Charlotte or are renting bandwidth from someone else?
Charlotte I lease racks in Caronet, a Level3/Cogent blend for transit and peering with Google/Amazon and some other stuff in the region
EDIT: Peering with Amazon, not Apple
why not OVH?
Because they don't meet my requeriments: "reliable ISP which I can trust"
Ah, I see. Of course OVH is not reliable: it doesn't have the funding required...
OVH has more than enough funding...
That was my point
They do have the funding, but funding doesn't automagically translate in reliability. I've seen a lot during all the years that I or my clients had been customers of them.
Just to put some examples:
And this is just a small example of what comes to my mind now.
Anyway, it doesn't really matter: I just don't consider OVH an option to host this, that's all.
Ramnode comes to mind
Did you consider using a cheaper dedicated server?
Not without RAID, so out of my budget by far.
Anyway, I only need a little slice of resources, so it wouldn't be environment friendly either
The pink unicorns thank you.
I am confident OVH will be in business tomorrow, but I'm also confident Dollar Tree will be in business tomorrow. Doesn't mean people want to shop at either all the time. The knock on OVH isn't the business risk but rather the support. I've never heard much praise...
How are OVH VPSes btw? Never had one myself.
@Nyr - so you want quality but cheap. Fair enough. The LET in me salutes you.
You might also consider:
SecureDragon is well known here and they've been very good. AUP doesn't prohibit adult content but ask @KuJoe . SD is usually not the absolute cheapest but I've never had a single issue with them and they are enterprise-grade. Many locations, DDOS prot available. Your budget and needs scream "SecureDragon" to me, if you've already excluded BuyVM and Ramnode. They're only N America I think.
CatalystHost is run by @ryanarp and I've had a good experience with them, as have others here. Dallas/Seattle.
What about Digital Ocean? Never was much of a customer myself but they're obviously big.
The vservers are good and support was fast last time I contacted them several months ago. They even go around with javascript, because I've once monitored them on a html page.
I've got ssd vps1(2016?) that network-wise seems insane to North West, UK. I mean you feel it over ssh.
I haven't done benching on the vserver(it runs mailcow), but I don't remember having downtimes over 3x days.
Correction
Maybe I should give them a second chance... it has been years since I used them and everyone seems generally happy. Business evolve and I'm sure they provide a good service looking at how people values them. Hum...
I've had both the OVZ ones (where everyone was complaining about reboots) and the new KVM ones (which are great for the price) and more stable. Definitively recommended if you need some cheap KVM for not-so-important stuff.
I had been with them for many years! Unfortunately, their cheapest KVM is $13/month which is quite expensive for my taste.
Been a customer for some time and service is indeed good, but would prefer to avoid them for this. They TOS aren't very clear about adult content (forbidden) while the APU seems to allow it as long as it's legal.
I'm a customer too, but honestly prefer to give my $5 to someone else. They once locked my entire account (which had available credit) while I was adding a new credit card and requested a photo of me holding my ID, just like the Chinese government asks its citizens to obtain the ICP...
That's fantastic.
I'm thinking about ditching my current personal account when my credit expires to have my credit card removed. I either added it foolishly when I registered or had to use it. I was referred by someone and got github credit.
I like digitalocean, but having my card there is a risk. Same with vultr.
Hm just could revoke my bank card via online bank, oh getting old)
Sorry, didn't see the KVM.
Otherwise I'm amused that we seem to often pick the same providers :-)
