SQLite like a boss.
Generally, I go with standard MySQL unless I need something that Percona offers that MySQL doesn't. In my case, it's actually Percona Cluster (though there is MySQL Cluster, I found that it's way too much of a pain in the ass).
MariaDB FTW, hence why it's default for Centmin Mod installs http://centminmod.com/faq.html#whymariadb
But MariaDB does use more memory but you get more performance - min would be 256MB memory
Another vote for SQLite if the application supports it. If not MySQL as MariaDB usually wants more RAM.
I'm currently testing MariaDB and using Aria engine.
We are using Percona on all our servers, memory usage ~ 40MB
@gbshouse are you using the default install or did you run some tweaks on it?
@budingyun hows the memory usage with the Aria engine?
CentOS 6 x86 + nginx + php-fpm + varnish + mariadb (aria) = +-50mb memory usage. With InnoDB enabled it's +-80mb memory usage.
Another vote for MariaDB here
All my servers run Percona as well, great stuff.
+1 for Percona it's really rocks
