SolusVM Support?
Has anybody else had experience with SolusVM support recently?
I installed SSL on my SolusVM install and I was trying to redirect http to https using their wiki guide. It didn't seem to be working so I submitted a ticket to support.
This is the message I sent them:
Hello, I've followed a guide on your wiki for redirecting non-SSL (http) to SSL (https). I've followed the guide but I can't get it to redirect. Any ideas? The guide I followed was: http://wiki.solusvm.com/index.php/Redirect_HTTP_to_HTTPS Thanks, Dominic
I got a response basically saying check that I've got mod_rewrite enabled and the right lines at the bottom of the file. I indicated that I'd done that. Then I got a reply asking for me to provide admin log in details and to add their SSH key which I did.
I then got provided with a link (which is nothing to do with what I asked) to installing an SSL certificate: http://wiki.solusvm.com/Installing_an_SSL_Certificate
I'd already done this and it was working fine. It was the redirect that wasn't working. They logged in and did something and replied with this:
Hi, can you please have a try by now by installing the ssl and also please have a check with ssl key and also mention the exact path in the lighttpd configuration file. Thanks.
I took a look, and they had restored the Lighttpd config back to default (with the ports on 5353 instead of 80) and completely removed the SSL certificate. They then told me to re install the SSL when it was already working fine

Has anybody else had an experience like this?

Ask for your ticket to be flagged to Phil. Indian outsourced support is worthless.
You shouldn't have any issue with redirecting if you followed the guide, it works well.
The support is renowned for being crap, but the guide is fairly straightforward.
Ah right. I'll give the guide another go. Not sure why it didn't work - pretty sure I did it right :P
They're outsourced by We3cares and pretty much get useless responses from them to and just request it to moved to L2
they are good actually. not worthless but on some issues they are worthless. but i rate a 6/10 for their outsourced support
wow, how did you know lol. we3cares james is worthless
Yep, every time I submit a ticket. I stopped except in dire situations (and even then I have to figure it out on my own).
@Randy I was talking to James last week lol But I think one of the support tech's changed email to test a email issue to his name@we3 lol
use xesupport instead or or another Indian outsourced Company instead of we3cares
http://24x7servermanagement.com/ is much better
Guys,
Followed the guide again. I fixed the SSL again after @soluslabs broke it. I had to re issue and set up SSL again
https://vps.switchvm.com works fine but you get a "414 - Request-URI Too Long" error when going to http://vps.switchvm.com
I added these at the bottom of the file, as the guide said:
$SERVER["socket"] == ":80" {
$HTTP["host"] =~ "vps.switchvm.com" {
url.redirect = ( "^/(.)" => "https://vps.switchvm.com:5656/$1 </no$
}
}
$SERVER["socket"] == ":5353" {
$HTTP["host"] =~ "vps.switchvm.com" {
url.redirect = ( "^/(.)" => "https://vps.switchvm.com:5656/$1 </no$
}
}
Apparantely pre doesn't work.
Any ideas?
A lovely quote from the last ticket I opened with them:
@KuJoe: Lol, that's a good one.
outsourced typed that?
This is what I do:
url.redirect = ( "^/(.*)" => "https://your.solusvm.com/$1" )
}
Just added that at the end of the file, and deleted the other one. I still get a 414 URI error though Not sure why.
@dominicl I just set reinstalled my Solus master / ssl and stuff.
Are you using the default lighttpd conf?
Did you add the three lighttpd modules to the top under server.modules?
"mod_rewrite","mod_redirect", "mod_alias",
Example of mine:
server.port = 80
server.pid-file = "/var/run/lighttpd.pid"
server.username = "solusvm"
server.groupname = "solusvm"
$SERVER["socket"] == "0.0.0.0:443" {
ssl.engine = "enable"
ssl.pemfile = "/usr/local/solusvm/ssl/solusvm.pem"
ssl.ca-file = "/usr/local/solusvm/ssl/solusvm.ca"
}
$SERVER["socket"] == "0.0.0.0:5656" {
ssl.engine = "enable"
ssl.pemfile = "/usr/local/solusvm/ssl/solusvm.pem"
ssl.ca-file = "/usr/local/solusvm/ssl/solusvm.ca"
}
$SERVER["socket"] == ":80" {
$HTTP["host"] =~ "manage.stormvz.com" {
url.redirect = ( "^/(.*)" => "https://manage.stormvz.com/$1" )
}
}
Yeah, I'm using the default. I just added what you did, and still get the 414 - Request-URI Too Long error. I also enabled those modules. It's certainly strange.
@dominicl Stupid questions but is httpd off and or uninstalled? Does it work without SSL?
Was working fine with SSL. It's working fine with SSL: https://vps.switchvm.com
It's just the redirect that's not working - from http to https.
Oh.For.Goodness.Sake. They just replied saying
Taken out link to admin area. I know SSL is working fine!! It's the redirect. This is the last time I'm relying on Solus support to fix something.
Redirecting to https://vps.switchvm.com/l
Seems like you've mistyped something in the conf for the port 80
$SERVER["socket"] == ":80" {
$HTTP["host"] =~ "vps.switchvm.com" {
url.redirect = ( "^/(.*)" => "https://vps.switchvm/$1" )
}
}
Because whatever you type like http://vps.switchvm.com/ddddd redirects to https://vps.switchvm.com/d
$SERVER["socket"] == ":80" {
$HTTP["host"] =~ "vps.switchvm.com" {
url.redirect = ( "^/(.)" => "https://vps.switchvm.com/$1" )
}
}
$SERVER["socket"] == ":5353" {
$HTTP["host"] =~ "vps.switchvm.com" {
url.redirect = ( "^/(.)" => "https://vps.switchvm.com:5656/$1" )
}
}
Copied and pasted directly.
is that $1 or $l, I can't really tell
Your redirect seems to be working correctly for me
Same here. @onepound
Yeah, you're right. Works fine in internet explorer now. It redirects to https://vps.switchvm.com:5656. Was expecting it to leave the ports off. Or is that what it's meant to do with SSL?
@dominicl it is functioning as your original ticket to solusvm wanted. If you want it to run from normal webports follow this guide http://wiki.solusvm.com/index.php?title=Switching_To_Standard_Web_Ports
Managed to get it working now, even though Solus weren't too helpful
well. i guess that sums up we3cares quality
If you ever dealt with altushost support you know how's we3cares like. One word, TERRIBLE.
