So what's the next big thing?
It's obvious that the choice for low-end VPS solutions is vast. There are services that shine, there are plenty that are outright horrible, and there are hundreds somewhere in between. We have VPS hosting for as little as a couple dollars per YEAR, providing really amazing resources for a myriad of innovative, ingenious, and yes, sometimes malicious uses.
But what's around the corner?
The low-end VPS world, in its current state, amounts to little more than generally unmanaged Linux instances. In and of itself, that really is truly amazing! Having your own virtual Internet server for literally pennies a day shows just how far we've come. But beyond the obvious nuances across companies such as varying RAM, HDD, connectivity (IPv4, IPv6, NAT), etc., they all generally provide the same thing: an Internet-connected, basic Linux instance.
So what's the next big thing in low-end VPS? What could be added to or changed in the the current offerings to enhance them and make them more competitive, more useful, and more innovative? Or will the low end VPS world simply become a vast scavenger hunt for fastest VPS whose IP addresses aren't blacklisted?

Free and penny providers will take place and spammers will take over the internet
The next big thing is the crash of the really low end market, such as dollars per year. It will come at some point and will put alot of these bigger businesses who pride themselves on being the cheapest in the market our of business.
Cloud. Pr0.
they will im sure, but, they will soon disappear, im amazed people still use summer hosts.
About ultra cheap and free hosts
It's exactly the oposite, bandwidth is getting cheaper, hardware more powerfull and cheap, SSD prices are lowering and webhosting stack configs are getting more optimized and efficient
Most people doesnt have high traffic sites, and many already opt to use services like Blogger that are completelly free
The only reason hosting has such size in the general public market its because PHP is dozens of times less efficient in resource usage compared to C, C++ or Java, but it will keep improving with time
