Rebranding GridHostingSolutions

JeffreyJeffrey Member
edited March 2013 in General

Hello everyone, I am currently looking into rebranding GridHostingSolutions. I opened it up in September of 2011 and later sold it in January of 2013 due to family issues. I was not sure if I would be back online any longer when I was looking to sell it, as I got into legal trouble unfortunately, with drugs. Luckily, the charges were dropped and I am not going to be locked up and I can continue to live my life like it was before, however, making much better decisions in life.

So far I have a great template picked out for the re-opening of GridHostingSolutions and I have gotten in touch with multiple datacenters in Florida, USA for deals. As of right now, I am currently looking into focusing on selling server services in Florida, USA and possibly the UK or Chicago, IL. When I do get GridHostingSolutions back up and running however, I will need someone to join me on this adventure, on the sales side. I lack sales experience, however, I can manage the hosting side of things just fine. This year, I will become CCNA Certified, Dreamweaver Certified and Photoshop Certified. At my school, I currently help my Cisco Networking teacher managing the servers in the multiple mini-datacenters around the school campus. If you are good in the sales field and would like to help out in this adventure, please respond below and Email me at: [email protected] It would be greatly appreciated if you could send in your experience in the hosting/sales field and living in the state of Florida would be preffered, however, not necessary.

What I Am Currently On Planning On Offering:

Unmanaged SolusVM OpenVZ/XEN VPS Servers (OpenVZ) - Orlando, FL
Managed Dedicated Servers - Orlando, FL

Well I'll give you credit for being candid and honest about what happened. Scary stuff. Hoping you stay on the straight and narrow path. Best of luck with everything!

  • @Jeffrey said: great template

I cringed a little when you said that, but nice job on being transparent, I wish you luck in the reopening.

  • @pubcrawler Thank you and @RobertClarke Haha, thank you!

  • I admire you for being so transparant about what has happened, and haven't hidden anything. I hope things stay OK for you in the future.

I wish you luck in the re-opening/re-branding.

  • @Jeffrey said: later sold it in January of 2013

So did you buy the business back? I wish you all the best of luck in your venture.

  • Best of luck for your future :).
and your upcoming line of business....

Anyone selling Blesta Owned Lifetime Under $250? | Regards.

  • @Sperryman he was not offering vps previously only shared and reseller hosting..

Anyone selling Blesta Owned Lifetime Under $250? | Regards.

  • @Sperryman I only sold the clients, I kept the brand. @MikeIn thank you and I was selling OpenVZ VPS Servers out of the new BHS Canada location with OVH, however, those did not sell very well because people did not like OVH. Thank you @dominicl

  • No problem. In Florida, I'd strongly recommend HostDime.

  • @dominicl Yes, I have contacted them and currently awaiting a response from a Dedicated Server Specialist.

    They're expensive. Like expensive.

Try and get Marcos F if you can ;)

    hdums.com isn't too bad.

  • First commend you for turning your life around. Second I would suggest finding a partner that will buy in 50%. Reason is just in case you fall off the wagon. Not saying you will, but prepare for the worst, hope for the best.

  • Great news everyone. I am currently working with a DC in Tampa, Florida on offering very low-end Dedicated servers for less than $15/Month. They will have the following:

    Intel Celeron 1.7Ghz CPU's
    1GB DDR2 RAM
250GB Bandwidth? (Not worked out yet)

The idea of this is to have these low-end dedicated servers compete with low-end VPS Servers at a similar price. This DC is also willing to give me a full rack, with 40 empty units for these bad boys. :)

  • @dominicl said: hdums.com isn't too bad.

They are for anything decent for hosting. I would rather go with Quadranet @ Miami.

    They're also good :)

  • any of the boys at hostdime can help. Manny the CEO is probably one of the nicest guys I have ever met. They bend over backwards to keep you!

@Jeffrey - $15/mo is really hard to achieve, I tried writing a business plan based on it as proof of concept but just couldn't do it. Do you perhaps get discount? Do you plan to make any profit at all? 250GB should be fine, resellers will do the overcomitting on the bandwidth for you :-)

edit: you should take a look at atoms, they use a lot less power (didn't intel release one with support upto 8GB with ECC and HT?)

  • If you're interested in hostdime I can put you in contact with someone there that I've worked with for over 10 years. He'll get you good pricing :)

This is going to be interesting.

  • @MrObvious That would be great. Someone on Live Chat opened a ticket for me and it has been unresponded to now for over an hour.

I know the dedicated servers team do get extremely busy, so it may take a while :) Just FYI. Support is extremely quick though.

You know what? There is a market for low end dedicated servers. No one really wants to address it though.

  • @pubcrawler , Why not? I mean, having a low-end dedicated server means, dedicated resources and I'm sure they would perform better than a low-end OpenVZ VPS on an oversold Node unit. ;)

  • It would be interesting if you can get a sub $15 deal on those low end dedicated servers. I've looked into offering low end dedicated servers before but I couldn't get the pricing right.

  • @titanicsaled I believe I've gotten the pricing just right with this datacenter. :)

  • @Jeffrey, no idea why folks aren't offering low end dedicated servers. Yeah there is a market.

    HostDime? Good luck with that...

  • Yep, lots of past tense horror stories and warnings with HostDime. Haven't heard much lately though. Hoping they've improved.

  • @Jeffrey

Can you share some more information?

  • @pubcrawler They had issues like 8-9 years ago. They were great for me when I was with them for like 4-5 years ago.

  • Good to hear @24khost. 4-5 years is a long time ago in this industry.

It is pretty difficult to go much lower than around $30 to $40 without losing money. Power, bandwidth, rack space, cooling, support staff, network equipment, PDUs, UPSs, maintenance, etc. all cost money.

If it was possible to offer a server for under $15 per month and make money, there would be lots of providers doing it.

  • True @qps, but plenty of amply viable, low power and high density gear out there for a song.

I was doing, oh 48 dedicated units in 4-6 U... Probably could do more today.

Of course, there were tradeoffs. Performance wasn't Xeon level ever. Storage options limited.

Those weren't "server" grade units, so if I ever rolled similar thing out for public, I'd make sure data center was short drive away for doing all my own hands on.

It might be possible to do something like this, but realistically, how much is someone going to be willing to pay for it when they can get a VPS for about the same price which would likely be more powerful?

  • @Jeffrey Why not take a small $50 or so as setup fees, that can/can't be settled with later month payment.
And increase the monthly payment to some $20 for New atom processor or AMD alternative (if any).
    Slightly more bandwidth.

I think it would be more sustainable.

  • The power vs. power is vague at best and often wrong at worst.

With dedicated server resources you can guarantee the baseline of performance and availability of the resources. Any problem therein, is the issue and cause of the purchaser/end user. Not some mysterious / denied / everything is fine when it isn't with many VPS providers.

That's in stark contrast to VPS market which is who knows what doing whatever.

You know how many times I've had to tell providers on here that they are having issues with their server? Cause? Typically? Torrents and Tor.

Shared resources are only as good as the management is and limited by monitoring and being highly proactive to squash things before they become issues.

80% of providers deal with messes after the fact. Part of why I have little restraint in dumping a provider at first sight of such.

What does the rack "cost" in terms of DC footprint, power, transit, support etc - if the maximum it can bring in is $600/m ?

For very small servers you could probably fit 2 servers in 1U or maybe even more.

Still $15 per server doesn't help much for ROI of the hardware and all the other expenses.

    -

  • very small servers = way more than 2 per 1U :)

Small is form factor. Not really nothing else so small these days.

    ARM based solutions.

  • Was considering this. You can fit 8 in 3U. Still not worth $15. Take out payment processing fees and it's worse.

Any remote hands cost would kill any profit.

  • Depends @concerto49.

@Damian proposed a model like what I use to do. Think Rapberry Pi's + USB drives.

Wimpy nodes like that with a SAN really could work. Power distribution rails and controls therefore are the problem. Have to be solutions for that out there.

I wouldn't sell such unless I self maintained the "cluster". Hands on would have a fit and be challenged.

  • @pubcrawler - I wrote software to deploy RPi's, if you buy them and USB drives then I'm in, haha

I going to be quite honest with you, having multiple businesses and closing each one doesn't make you look too good. What do you offer to make me think this won't disappear again?

This signature is brought to you by the NSA. Spying on the entire world since 1952!

  • @RobertClarke Aha, right! And @TheHackBox Absolutely nothing, only your judgement. I can't prove GHS will be around 6 months from now, neither can any other host.

  • @RobertClarke I Lol'ed when I figured out u were from OmniTechNews and that you knew that little kid with all those servers in LA running it with his dad's money. ;)

  • I have gotten into further contact with the datacenter in Florida that I am working with to offer low-end dedicated servers.

They Will most likely have the following specs at these prices:
    Intel Celeron 1.8 - 2.6Ghz
    1GB Ram
    180GB HDD
    250GB Monthly Bandwidth - $20/Month?

    Intel Celeron 1.8 - 2.6Ghz
    512MB Ram
    80GB IDE HDD
    250GB Monthly Bandwidth - $15/Month?

Trying to bash me when pointing out a flaw with your wording. Very professional.
