Dedicated vs Colo

Given the number of dedicated server offers. Are there similar offers for colo? Looking at some of the LE Dedi's specs (and the phasing out of certain offers), it almost seems worth while buying a NUC or Acer Revo and shipping it off... I haven't seen many LE colo offers thou, is it even a thing?

  • Hi Micheal, its because its not as popular id guess. People prefer not to have to purchase the equipment outright and then pay for the maintenance of it. Your limiting who will host you with a computer like that as it wont fit in a typical rack unless its on a shelf - and then it may take up more than 1u - There are people about who can though.

  • I guess that's true, but there isn't a reason why you couldn't have 4 revo's / NUCs to a 'u' though.
Something we are thinking about doing in our rack in Norwich , but wasn't sure if it was even worth investigating. The number of old DL360's we have kicking about we could just VPS them up I guess. (that moves the work / responsibility from the user to us and that's fine, but would be reflected in the cost).

  • There's tons of colo offers on WHT. It doesn't come up that often around here, but it does sometimes.

    Couple reasons:

    • Remote hands
    • Power outlet limitations, you're not allowed to daisy chain PDUs.

Oh no, that is definitely not worth it. If you wanted some tiny colo space for $7 a month, it doesn't exist. Other than occasional very special offers, colo hosting starts around $35-40 a month, e.g. joesdatacenter.com (hmm they just raised their prices to start at $50/mo, but you get 5 ip's, 20TB on a gbps port, and 2 amps of power for that).

So that costs as much as most of the midrange dedicated servers around here. The reason you'd do it is if you want to put 8 HDD's in a box or something like that, and own the hardware. Otherwise a dedi is both less headache and usually less expensive than DIY colo. Colo gets interesting when you have enough servers for a full rack.

With the prices now, it's almost not worth it to colo unless you need an insane spec with tons of drives or a really specific (niche) location.

Colo is going to cost you $40/mo minimum - but likely closer to $70, $80, $100 for 1U/1-2A in some more 'budget' locations. On the flip side, I currently have multiple rented E3 boxes for <$40/mo.

As an example, even an older E3 is going to cost you at least a few hundred plus the cost of drives, and then you're looking at $40-$80/mo for 1U/1A in most popular locations (where the dedi deals are).

Better to just pay someone else and let the hardware be their problem. If it doesn't work out you can walk away from it easily and maybe lose a month or partial months payment.
