Plex.tv alternatives?
Hello,
I have alot of video content on my dedicated server and I like to stream it casually to my PC.
My server runs Debian 6 and appearently this is a problem because plex.tv does not officially support it and the same story goes for XBMC - despite that i've installed Plex.tv using their ubuntu mirror Plex does work but not entirely:
I've no clue why plex tells me that they cannot reach my server! the iptables firewall is set to accept everything so there should be no problem.
Anyways, I wanna move on and see if you guys could come up with some alternatives - I prefer streaming servers that run headless without GUI but this is not a requirement.
Much appreciated!!

Oh my damn, where did you got that background from? Looks beautiful.
OT:
Could you post the plex log files here? Also, did it start without any errors?
I have a plex server installed on debian with Crissic. Works like a charm!
Theres obly one annoying thing, not important but annoying and that is that subtitles aren't found even if they are there. I just make sure I run the ones with subs from my windows installation instead.
You might want to look at http://git.vpsboard.com/fisle/netflask
Never used it myself but it looks nice from the screenshots.

OT:
I did not see any errors.
And this is the reason I rather use XBMC and search for my own subs using the XBMC subs addon.
I had the same issue with my Ubuntu server. Plex had issues when my server had a public address. Just took a couple of tries (and faked port forwarding).
The port is 32400, unless you forwarded it
I will keep trying because i still have it installed but i'm not confident about plex anymore, its not just those bugs - I know that it isn't officially released for Debian, I just really dont like the idea of being forced to connect my server to the myplex service to handle authorizations.
Yeah, it was 32400 but I tried manual alternative ports after seeing the auto function fail in the hope it fixes the problem. Theres no firewall or anything like it that blocks anything.
Since Plex allows access from 127.0.0.1 without authorization, how about proxy it with nginx and authorize it with your own system?
Sounds like it could work but requires alot of effort, even if I would go down this road i'd still have the problem of Plex not being remotely accessable.
There must be alternative software that just works as intended without going through all this right? i'd rather not reformat my server and install some random windows copy on it just to get streaming entertainment working.
I run Plex on Ubuntu on a dedi and connect over OpenVPN but not being able to control the bind and having to rely on the firewall is annoying. The connection to a linode VPS for myplex auth is also something I'd also like to avoid.
I don't have an alternative but I'd be interested in one.
Set the port to 32400 and but set it to manual detection, kinda weird I know but worked for me.
This has worked for me too.... this and a reboot (yeah, weird but has worked several times)
Make sure if you changing any change on the flex config file the flex service should be stopped first then make change and start the service. If you dont stop the service and make some changes it will not be saved. I have seen this in past. Hope this helps
And here are your alternatives

Oh..this is an ugly animal.
I am running Plex under NAT'd proxmox. I have tried the nginx route by proxying it to an outgoing domain, but I was never able to connect my server to myplex. I have tried a lot of other configurations, forwarded the required ports to my main IP. I've given up on this. For now, my plex box is stopped and let me know if you find a way out of this.
Why can't plex just stick to a port like all the other programs do??

I've been using plex for years. In the forums is a plex repo and deb files users have converted. I have a huge library and it works great. The best part is ease of sharing remotely to my 100+ friends that watch via roku and chromecast.
Thank you guys!
for now i'll have enough resources to go through and see what works out best in this scenario, for refference i'll add how I installed Plex on debian 6 - I should've added this to my original post.

it looks like i'll get rid of Plex for now and try out @itgods suggestion
http://limbomedia.net looks really great and easy to use.
I installed it using this repo on my debian.

Like I said, works like a charm
Plex Server Debian Repo:
sudo apt-get install curl echo "deb http://shell.ninthgate.se/packages/debian squeeze main" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list.d/plexmediaserver.list sudo curl http://shell.ninthgate.se/packages/shell-ninthgate-se-keyring.key | sudo apt-key add - sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install plexmediaserver
All it takes a little of searching.

I came agross the ninthgate.se mirror + tutorial but I really didn't see it as trustworthy - I only trust the official mirrors. I'm not that comfy with linux in general so I wont be able to track much suspicious activity myself if one of the mirrors downloads backdoored software to my server.
I've set this Muthafucka up on Debian today using the ninthgate.se repo, works like a charm; it's all via the official forums so someone would have piped up if it was dodgy.
But if you want alternatives, I've used subsonic for a couple of years and it works nicely, piss easy install too.
Know that feeling. I want to move, but I can't find anything else that has the device support that Plex has.
Although myplex makes sense for most home (not technical) users. You can set up an OpenVPN/Tinc VPN to completely take your Plex server offline (remove the myplex dependency by running everything on the local network - the VPN).
Sort of. I have mine behind OpenVPN but it refuses to sync to clients if the server is not logged into myplex for example.
Never understood why users don't just use myPlex and keep attempting to do things through VPN. Are these users streaming super illegal stuff ... worse than just copyright infringement videos?
Your OpenVPN network needs to transport at least level 4 packets for that to work. So Tinc in switch mode or OpenVPN in TAP mode. The default Tun mode will not work.
EDIT: Or level 3...
I don't like myplex because it acts as a authorization middleman - if there are problems with their server your server will not allow anyone in I think? ontop of that you do not know what else is being sent to the myplex server. its just suspicious and unnessary to have them between you and your server.
paranoid person i see ... all you had to say
