1-to-1 Audio Calling
Hey guys,
I know this question may seem really obvious to some of you, but it would be really appreciated if you help out
I need to set up a 1-to-1 audio call between two participants (1 + 1 = 2) with support for more. I've heard that asterisk can do what I need, but you guys probably know more about it than me
I'd also like support for mobile devices, and different bandwidth encoding (3G/Wifi connections) etc.
Thanks!

You lost me.
Just use Skype :P
I know, it's actually 2nd year Uni mathematics so don't worry about it till then
Yes, but Skype sucks.
I like it, works on my two laptops and 4 RDP's + mobile/tablet and always syncs nice :P Maybe I am just a man of simple pleasures?
Believe me, I love Skype sometimes. It works excellently for chats, but sucks with audio and video. Being a user of multiple RDP sessions too, it's syncing abilities are useful.
Google Voice.
You can run mumble and just have two people in the channel.
Now that's a good idea.
I'm Australian.
Are you only looking for a free solution?
What a darn shame, it's pretty good too... I've had calls with 4 people at the same time.
I'm looking for something I can set up on a VPS (self-hosted).
Ah, ok. What country will all the participants be in? If it's the same one then calling and sms are probably the easiest and cheapest considering the price of bandwidth here.
Mumble would be your best bet. If you really want however you could setup Asterisk and run a phone system for this, and use a soft-phone.
Both Australian. Data is cheaper than calling (13c a minute) for the two participants.
Think you need a new phone plan then. As others have said, mumble but I prefer teamspeak.
Needless you say this'll need to be hosted in Australia.
Calls between providers are really horrible >.<
Mumble it is then
You on telstra or optus? Or God forbid Vodafone.
If you want to test it out and dont want to spend the time setting the server up just yet PM me and ill give you a my servers info so you can try. Server is currently hosted in NY, NY.
I'm on optus and they're on Telstra.
I think you need to look for better options. If it's cheaper for you do do this instead of calling then something is very wrong.
Such as? I'm open to any ideas
I'll send you a PM in a bit.
You could probably try something with WebRTC, although you'd need to write a solution yourself, and browsers are still catching up [1], as its standardization itself evolves. There is a demo available at [2] and something fancier at [3], if you want to take a look.
Fancy! Thanks for the share
TeamSpeak
Mumble has better mobile support.

Just set up two extensions and the two parties can dial each other directly for FREE using Zoiper (download link). Conference calls and integration with Google Voice (or your favorite VoIP provider) are also possible. Remember to choose a suitable codec for your connection, e.g. use "ulaw" on WiFi, and "gsm" on 3G.
The plumble app is amazing.
