my vote for uptimerobot.com
Uptimerobot.com & Pingdom.com A+
Uptimerobot FTW and its free

But i will add https://www.icinga.org/ (fork of Nagios), http://ganglia.info/?page_id=69 (self hosted), http://www.port-monitor.com/, Uptime (install in 2 min on your server) https://github.com/fzaninotto/uptime etc...
I would suggest uptimerobot.com, its free and you can set up plenty of "monitor's"
uptimerobot and statuscake as well, i was a paid pingdom (about a year ago) but not sure if i didnt setup correctly or what, but it was wayyy to sensitive, so i kept getting alerts all the time or after tweaks none at all from pingdom
Uptimerobot seems to have false downtime for me, and I've got the same sites monitored in Pingdom with 100% uptime!
@fiend did you have pingdom sending out alerts when down for 1 min?
@linuxthefish uptimerobot with me... tends to be slower on checking downtime but quick on back up again (while statuscake tends to be the sharpest), still i prefer 5min slow than nothing at all, i don't mind the occasional glitch :P also i use uptimerobot with everything (sites/vps/dedi/other stuff) and statuscake only with the vps/dedi...
with pingdom... humm not too sure about the settings (was a year ago), but i did change them a lot to try and find a good middle ground and well i have quite a few vps/dedi and even more sites so me moving on was not only that it wasnt perfect but also the price i was paying (10 bucks or somethin) didnt cover everything i wanted to monitor, i would say pingdom gives you lots, but the default settings are not ideal and the pricing is not ideal for me :P to cover everything i would need to be on the 100bucks a month >_> yeah i prefer to spend that on backups and cdn's ...

@mywisp - We'll be happy to offer you an extended free trial if you'd like to kick the tires at NodePing server monitoring.
We use http://uptimerobot.com.
I use uptimerobot for a variety of vps, dedis and websites and have been very happy with the performance
http://uptimerobot.com ftw.
My vote for uptimerobot.com
That is an interesting way to do it. I'll have to check it out just to see how they set it up.
FWIW, I use uptimerobot, but I'm debating if I want to set up Icinga or not... so far my tests have not worked on either Apache or Nginx. =/
Newrelic;
+1 Uptimerobot.com;
+1 Pingdom.com;
I always use at least 2, better 3 monitoring services
I use Google Docs
I hired someone to stare at my website and write down times on a piece of paper
Haven't felt the need to use more than one service since I use nodeping. I canceled my pingdom subscription and deleted almost all of my monitors with statuscake, as they were just unreliable.
uptimerobot is very nice,
but i also use nodequery to monitor other things
Utilize my own LEBs with Geekping.
Thanks for the replies. I'm going to try the ideas and websites you've posted here.
I am very happy with www.monitive.com
I suggest you use Pingdom, their services are pretty good.
NodePing and Port-Monitor
I use uptimerobot and have been very happy with it.
I'm also trying out elastictrace but I don't feel like their service is quite "there" yet. Their agent has a thread leak (creates an increasing number of threads over time and eats more and more memory) and they don't have any kind of alerting when a system goes down. Their site is very slick though and their support has been good. I think they have a lot of potential but still have some work to do.
I would say Uptimerobot and Pingdom, Highly recommended especially with instant sms alerts notifying about any downtimes.
