nginx + https://github.com/arut/nginx-rtmp-module would be my top recommendation
others:
http://www.rtmpd.com/
http://www.red5.org/
you want all free!
http://www.rtmpd.com
But if you want streaming in mp4 to ios devices, effectively, just give up the idea of free and don't think about it again, it'll ruin days of your life.
vlc will do streaming just fine
one more thing, what kind of format do you have as source ?
@jarland: nginx-rtmp-server does that rather well though. They added in MPEG-DASH too
Wat
U mean...
Wat
Yeah. I told you about it, I thought! It just doesn't support RTMP DVR, but you could hack it together with HLS Event playlists.
if you mean source as
php/html and jquery is what i will be working with here.
i am taking a look at NGINX-based Media Streaming
Server
was it a bad idea to ask for free alternatives to wowza.
or perhaps it was the other thread about free domain.
which i do not see anything wrong with asking...
Vlc is awesome. I use it for hls stream relay and hls from files. Make sure its 2+ though older version suck a little
you need to build from source for nginx rtmp right? cant apt-get install right away?
Yeah, but compiling nginx is fairly easy and the deps are very minute. Nginx RTMP doesn't require ffmpeg to compile anymore.
For Cent, I can link to an SRPM I made with the latest nginx and nginx-rtmp.
I look at the config, its so much simpler than plain crtmpd. is it lightweight as crtmpd?
A bit less, but I have had success running it RTMP only on 128M boxen.
I haven't tried using HLS on low resource VPSes because you generally want to use ffmpeg to send a lower bitrate version of the stream, so you'd want RAM and CPU to do so.
I'm posting on mobile right now - I can throw up a short runthrough when I get home if you'd like.
@ihatetonyy ... Please do, will you? Thank you so much in advance!!!
@ihatetonyy thanks. i thought that module was based on crtmpd crtmpd is so great, uses almost no resource
Tutorial got a bit longer than I'd like. I'm hoping to have it posted on Saturday.
Sorry about the delay, but I promise it'll be good.
nice help
