OVZ
OpenVZ. Faster and usually cheaper
LowPrice = OVZ || Performance/Security/Other = KVM!
KVM - Actually Virtualization and not just a fancy jailed shell.
Cheers!
KVM.
KVM or Xen
KVM or Xen, i don´t like OVZ
KVM for SSL terminators, databases.
Suggest only using openvz for dumb http servers and a n+1 'push destination' for pre-encrypted-and-checksummed backups.
Plenty of process isolation/sandboxing options are emerging these days, to run inside kvm/dedi.
Paranoia is a healthy trait in the ultra-long-run.
Providers get acquired /hacked/hire unethical kids all the time.
I like OpenVZ for the less crucial stuff (Dumb web server, development, testing, etc...)
KVM For production/security.
KVM/VMware/XEN
KVM all the way!
Alternatively, Hyper-V and VMWare are good choices.
KVM seems to be more popular...is this because of security reasons?
KVM. OpenVZ is utter sh..
And it is virtualization.
XEN also works.
OVZ is usually cheaper so ideal for dumb stuff, otherwise KVM.
KVM, where you are the only 'root' in your VPS, and the host (or their $2/ticket "support specialists") can't view all your processes, stealthily login into your VPS and view, edit or delete any of your files without you even knowing.
If there is really a preference for OpenVZ, then go for Odin Virtuozzo instead of the open source version.
That is because it is open source, bare metal hypervisor, backed by Red Hat, not confusing for newbies like whether to choose XEN PV or HVM, you are not asked to pay to get all the latest features such as with VMware & has slightly less overhead than XEN on latest kernels.
I normally prefer KVM, as it can't be oversold this easily, it's harder for the provider to access files, it's generally more isolated, I can disable SWAP and kernel is modifiable (e.g. for swappiness if I didn't disable SWAP or for virtual devices (like TUN/TAP)).
OVZ is fine for cheap VPS and the performance is better.
Xen - everything I like about KVM, but performance is worse.
ovz is easy to control while , kvm is secure to use.
Depends on what it's being used for, if I have no specific need for KVM then OVZ. However in choosing an OVZ provider it's the provider that is more important in my view.
Xen the best.
KVM vs OVZ like a car vs bus
The question was what do you prefer not how do they compare.
I would love to hear your explanation of this analogy.
OVZ is fine for 95% of my uses. If I specifically need Windows, for example, then either KVM or Xen HVM.
If the price is right, KVM.
I like KVM.
What you prefer to drive a car or ride in a city bus?
Really depends on the needs. OVZ for less serious stuff, KVM for serious stuff.
If I want to run over @Jack then bus, otherwise walk.
KVM is you rely on the latest kernel features, Open VZ otherwise.
