Vultr Strange Accident

Hello Everyone,
I am using vultr for 2-3 months & hosting my client's ASP.net Windows servers.
I was having no issues in all that time, support is good & all that went good.
In 2 days they lost all of that goodness, actually two of my clients had some DDoS attacks & they ate up to 7-8 TB bandwidth.
That costed me around $70, voila it ate all of vultr credits.

Cons :
They don't use any type of firewall to null route or any other protection against DDoS.
They don't send your email unless you ran out of credits or there is any abuse complain against you.
They don't even send you a single mail even if you ate more than allowed bandwidth in a single day.

If you think that you can face any of those DDoS attacks so it is much better to avoid them.

That is a specialist service, they have never claimed to offer that so it is a bit unfair calling it a con in light of your circumstances.

Agreed, some sort of 80% BW limit would be nice, few people have mentioned that.

That applies to pretty much any host that does not offer protection.

Rough ride ether way, sorry that happened to you.

    You are pretty true.
But as far as i experienced, most of hosts at least notice & null route with 2-3 hours.
They are not offering that service doesn't mean that they should just eat money & let us face troubles :(

I think its time to leave Vultr :(

I understand your perspective, I think allowing you to go over your BW limit to that degree is a bit silly, maybe they will work with you a little on that?

The flip side is others would just complain if they 24 hour null routed when you got doss'ed, if they did it after an hour people would say it should be 3, if they did it in 3 others would say it should be 1, it is a lose/lose situation.

The obvious thing and really not hard to do is to simply have a tick box in the panel that says, shut down on 100% BW use.

    @AnthonySmith
I can understand that now but what i have on vultr was only thing what i had & all that they ate up.
I asked for bandwidth log, they said that they aren't allowed to so :( Can't we have our own logs ? It's pity.

  • SadySady Member

    @kcaj
Oh, i will not take a single second to use that check-box if i ever know about that.

Hope that Dave can do any favor for me :(

He eventually will have to when he checks your past replies about Delimiter :p

You could install vnstat to keep track of your usage in future!

    In windows?

Ah, Windows. That strange OS... Well, I am sure there is an equivalent for vnstat there.

  • @DaveA

How about an option that shuts down the server when bandwidth usage reaches 100% ?

    (In addition to the warnings)

  • Why don't they shut down the server @ %100 BW usage like other providers?

There are people who don't like that (like myself, by the way). I prefer paying overages than getting shut down while one of my sites has its successfull 15 minutes for a day. But having proper notification and eMail alerts in place is a good thing and even a user-defined maximum bandwidth consumption prior to shutdown would be nice.

  • udkudk Member

I also prefer to pay extra should I go over (albeit not at extortionate rates) but would be nice to have an option for others.

We currently have email notifications based on your usage thresholds:

    https://www.vultr.com/news/33/Bandwidth-Overage-Alerts

We will add a checkbox in your manage server tab to stop(suspend) an instance if the bandwidth limited is reached. This will be opt-in and will not be a default setting because there are far more people who would not want their server stopped than those that do.

  • I can't imagine people want to keep their server online while being under attack.. Those bandwidth draining ddos attacks would probably destroy all profits you might generate with the server and create a huge debt of bandwidth bills.

  • @Mark_R - I don't know his particular circumstance but with the case of an inbound DDOS attack we would typically waive the fees.

You should move to OVH. Free DDoS protection and unlimited bandwidth.

  • Unless DDOS protection provided with service, most of the hosts would just disconnect your machine, null loop your IP, shut your machine, even kick you away, sometimes without a refund.

Some people prefer that their machine remain online, while others would rather save their traffic.

It's really hard to balance, for it is impossible of Vultr to know what everyone's thought. Vultr is no more than a company, not Big Brother nor NSA...

@DaveA Maybe Vultr can put up some notice programme like what Linode has, send warning E-mails when CPU/IO/network reaches some particular limits? This

  • @superwbd - We're thinking to add a notification system as part of our monitoring addition to the panel.

I must say, @DaveA's (Vultr's) responsiveness and willingness to implement changes is awesome. It's this sort of thing that makes you want to do business with them.

I have lost about $70 in that & i am in negative on vultr now :(
I didn't know about that notification thing as you announced it on 29th july & i haven't checked that :(

  • On the subject of DDoS Protection, I know I'll probably get a lot of heat for posting this.

ColoCrossing has a reasonable quick reaction to confirmed and potential DDoS Attacks. Should the incoming traffic to a certain IP exceed a pre-defined threshold, the IP is null-routed for a period of time between 1 and 4 hours and the user is automatically notified on the incident when the null-route is added or removed. Sometimes it's a false-positive attack, but if you respond to the open ticket and request the null-route to be lifted, you can expect a response within 1~5 minutes.

I agree. You couldn't have said it any better.

DM me your email/account at Vultr and I'll take a look at your situation.

Reporting to mods to close/delete this thread.

@DaveA solved that & sent $73.58 to the account :) Much appreciated,

UPDATE : I am unable to report that :(

  • We now have the option for you to disable(suspend) your instance automatically when your bandwidth transfer limit has been reached.
