There are several reasons why you may not want to run your own mail server:

  1. Your VPS does not have enough memory
  2. Running mail server on cheap VPS is not that reliable.
  3. It seems too complicated to run mail server, handling spam, etc.
  4. You are just simply lazy to do it by yourself.
  5. And probably many more…

Note:- Google Apps is no more free (Except for schools and universities). Since Dec. 6, 2012, Google Apps (Free), has been discontinued, though user may sign up for 1 month free trial of “Google Apps for Business” afterwards normal/general pricing will apply. Also existing Google Apps for business users who have free accounts get to carry on without paying the subscription fee. Additionally, Google discontinues Google Sync (MS Exchange Active Sync). So one is left with simply IMAP (see: http://www.zdnet.com/google-discontinuing-support-for-exchange-activesync-affecting-windows-phone-and-iphone-users-7000008833/ )
