FAQ:

Q: Who are you guys? How long have you been around?
A: UltraVPS is a division of Versaweb - the guys who sell awesome, cheap dedicated servers. We've been providing VPS hosting services for over 5 years, but we're new to the Low End Talk market.

Q: Why are these Promo plans so cheap?
A: We're currently in the process of rolling out an entirely new KVM-based product line (we used to provide mainly OpenVZ VM's). We're looking to get the word out on what we have to offer, so we're offering some amazing bargain priced VM's to start building up some word of mouth - we'll hook you up so that you can hook us up!

Q: Is there any kind of guarantee?
A: Buy it and try it for 15 days. if it sucks, we'll give you your money back (as long as you didn't do anything stupid, like SPAM).

Q: Are these managed or unmanaged plans?
A: These VPS plans are unmanaged. We'll try and help out where we can via our ticket system, but at the end of the day It's all you.

Q: Do these Promo VPS plans include backups?
A: No, backups are not included, but will be available as an add-on in the next few weeks.

Q: Do you offer Windows on these VPS plans?
A: Nope - these plans are Linux only. Windows will be available on our standard VPS plans which will be available in a few weeks.

Q: Do you have a test IP / test file?
A: Sure! 199.47.210.50 - http://199.47.210.50/100mbtest.bin

Q: Who are your network providers?
A: Our Las Vegas location uses NTT, Abovenet, HE.net, Cogent, TW Telecom, and dozens of private peering arrangements. Check it out - AS53340

Q: Can I get IPv6?
A: Not yet, but soon. We promise. Our network is 100% v6 ready, but we're still testing out some of the new v6 features in SolusVM. Once we're happy, we'll roll it out at no added cost.

Q: Any locations other than Vegas?
A: We're hoping to have Seattle online in just a couple of weeks - we're just working out some final details before we go live.

Q: How does your DDoS protection work?
A: Our system automatically detects incoming attacks and null routes the targeted IP, thereby minimizing collateral damage and keeping you online even if you have virtual neighbors who aren't so nice. We offer enterprise-grade DDoS MITIGATION too - contact our Sales dept. if you are interested.

Q: How can I use my VPS? Any restrictions?
A: No TOR, no torrents, nothing illegal, no SPAM, no DDoS attacks, etc. Basically, don't be an idiot, and you won't have any issues.

Thanks for reading, and have a good day!

  • do you use RAID?

  • Rob_TRob_T Member, Host Rep

The nodes used to host these Promo VPS plans do not have RAID, but we do take the time to carefully explain to each SSD how important it's job is and how much we care about it before we install it, so there's that.

I think I'd rather that than do something as simple as software RAID, it makes the SSD very brave so it can face all the nasty people who use DD porn to get off.

We've all had friends who had to face their DD porn addiction. The important thing is to support them in their time of need. With enough support and a healthy dose of reality, I think anyone can kick the habit of relying purely on synthetic benchmarks to determine performance.

Are you prepared for the negative threads on LET and WHT when that single SSD eventually fails and takes a node's worth of customers' data with it?

    Ok, slowly repeat after me...

    RAID

    is

    not

    a

    backup.

I'll see your failed SSD, and raise you one 'rm -rf /' on a root compromised, RAID-equipped hypervisor. Then we'll see who gets roasted on WHT / LEB worse, mmkay? RAID's can fail just like single disks can fail - often in far more spectacular fashion, since people tend to make the mistake of relying on them as a backup (which you shouldn't do, in case I wasn't clear).

Rob's lesson on system administration best practices is now complete for the evening. Thank you for playing.

Wanted to know if you have a bigger plan by any chance?

  • lbftlbft Member

I'm well aware that RAID mainly provides availability, not backups. But I also live in the real world where most people buying unmanaged VPSes either don't have backups or have backups that are stale. Even if someone has daily backups (being optimistic), a day's worth of data could be quite painful to lose.

Both you and I know that a properly managed, adequately specced local RAID will be far less likely to fail than a single disk. Individual disks will eventually fail, and data loss events will hurt your business (because they will hurt your customers, and because you didn't warn them upfront about the risk).

But thanks for your patronising tone all the same.

We're only offering the two plans listed at this time.

    Thanks!

(because they will hurt your customers, and because you didn't warn them upfront about the risk).

Umm, I guess I'm just a little confused by your comments. We've been completely transparent about the fact that a) backups aren't included (see our FAQ in the post), and b) the hypervisors are not running RAID (see our first follow-up post). Doesn't that constitute being made aware of what you are buying?

My apologies If I sounded patronizing (I was going for a bit of levity with a just a hint of sarcasm, btw). I only wanted to point out the error in your comments, because I can't even count the number of times I've heard a customer say something like "I don't need backups - my server has RAID!", and your comments seem to perpetuate that idea.

    it's ok now~

OKay i am learning go and wanted to have a public server to test my code on how do u handle things like cpu abuse and so on its not planing on happening but it is a test platform for me.

  • Rob_TRob_T Member, Host Rep

CPU resources are made available on a 'fair share' basis. If we notice you are hammering the CPU, you will get a warning. Continued abuse will be bad news for you.

We're generally pretty flexible and easy to work with, but we do have to be fair to everyone.

Initial impression ... it's quite fast and I like it.
    Porn - serverbear.com/benchmark/2014/08/15/AzyQ73gDMqqxdjZa

Setup is not instant, but quick enough. The IPs I was assigned are clean.
For O/S install I only see templates, no ISOs to mount in the CD drive.

It's still fast, there have been no problems, and I still like it.
Although I have only had sales/billing related tickets, support has been fast and efficient.
