Looking for reliable west coast VPS
Hi all,
I am currently looking for a VPS with specs below.
Virtualization - KVM / XEN HV
2 ~ 4 CPU cores (not going to hog the cores but spike might occur on certain period of the day)
6GB ~ 8GB RAM
10GB ~ 25GB Storage
1Gbps port doesn't need too much bandwidth (100G ~ 500G is fine)
Location - US West Coast
Budget - Below $50/month
Possibly with 99.95% uptime SLA
I am currently hosting my site on Datashack but their network are quite bad from my experience.
I am looking at Quadra cloud in LA, price wise is good whereas I can get the specs I want at around $40/month.
I wanted to go with VPS instead of dedicated server because if say I want to have redundant power/network/storage on dedicated server that would cost too much but I can get redundant power/network/storage with a VPS at a much lower cost.
So, any recommendation?

Linode 4GB is $40/month.
Looked into that, their west coast network giving us 280ms from our target customer region.
If they can offer around 200ms such as Quadra LA I would definitely go with them.
Where are you? Our East coast location will have better latency to Asia and Australia than 280 ms. Lol
Stop being so humble. VPSDime fits the bill at $7/mo.
My pings to Serverian's VPSDime LA test IP goes from AU to HK and then to LA, and I get 225ms.
Your best bet would be to go with Quadranet direct and get their "Asia Optimised" IP
This is ii/internode's own fault, actually -- not much anyone can do about that one.
Internode's support was stellar and highly knowledgeable when I was with them (before the acquisition), maybe call them up and ask about it?
Yea, not sure why though. Linode's fremont DC is giving me very bad ping. I am from Malaysia (Asia).
Thanks for suggestion, I just checked their plan and I am impressed that they can offer such low price for the resources allocated.
Tried their LA and it can get me about 210ms which is pretty good.
Anyone got some saying about their uptime?
My employer is an Internode Partner, I will ticket it up and get it fixed.
Before the aquisition, yeah they used to price themselves on minimum hop. Just quietly, ii migrated to Internode's backhaul network because it was built better. They just changed the DNS names.
EDIT: Just did a test from one of our Web24 VPS's, went via TPG to Powertel Flinders St, then to Globalswitch Sydney, then directly into Hurricane Electric in SJ. 175ms total.
EDIT2: Want more crazy? Here's a traceroute from ii's own looking glass on the LA router to VPSDime's LA test IP....
Router: AS4739 - Los Angeles, USA Command: traceroute ip 23.92.53.100 Tracing the route to 23.92.53.100 1 te0-0-0-4-10102.br1.lax1.on.ii.net (203.16.213.182) 4 msec 4 msec 0 msec 2 xe-2-1-0.br1.syd4.on.ii.net (203.16.213.70) 149 msec 152 msec xe-6-0-1.br1.syd4.on.ii.net (150.101.34.43) 148 msec 3 te0-0-0-0.br1.hkg2.on.ii.net (150.101.33.199) 260 msec 261 msec 260 msec 4 te0-0-0-0.br1.hkg2.on.ii.net (150.101.33.199) 261 msec 256 msec 260 msec 5 btn5-10G.hkix.net (202.40.160.244) 277 msec TenGE9-1.br02.lax05.pccwbtn.net (63.218.72.138) 557 msec 320 msec 6 dbtransit.ge9-6.br02.lax05.pccwbtn.net (63.218.73.174) 241 msec 233 msec 212 msec 7 colo-lax13.as29761.net (96.44.180.98) 232 msec 204 msec 208 msec 8 66.63.172.26.static.quadranet.com (66.63.172.26) 209 msec 232 msec 237 msec 9 23.92.53.100 264 msec 233 msec 236 msec
Yep, lets go from LA to LA via SXC, then to HK, and finally back into LA.
I don't think it's a BGP fallacy, probably intentional to conserve capacity on the actual LAX-bound links for whatever reason.
Good luck though, you'll be doing a lot of people a favor if you can stop them from arbitrarily routing things through HK for US west.
recently review here: http://lowendtalk.com/discussion/31907/a-very-honest-review-of-vpsdime
It's just how they route. It 1/2 goes to HK and 1/2 goes to Singapore. NTT is Singapore. Telia is HK.
They don't want to pay for Sprint
There's no need to be paying for Sprint anyway, Both iiBorg and Quadra peer at Equinix in LA..... Well according to the May 2014 map and the last WHT thread from Quadra which specifically mentions it.
I feel a whingepool thread coming on.

This is where we're probably going to have our east coast location. It tops out at 285 ms to Indonesia...
Here's our west coast, though, which is more in-line with Quadranet.

There was already one about traffic to China etc. You miss the point that they aren't just going to do it for 1 host i.e. Quadra. One the scale of things Quadra is quite small to anything ii would consider. It took them a whole thread and weeks to deal with issues to most of China.
It's meant to run as a direct peer via Equinix Exchange in LA from one of their own POPs - that should be the lowest cost route that they have.
Meanwhile, did a traceroute to the Quadra internal test Ip as publish various places. Got this:
C:\>tracert 216.144.225.250 Tracing route to web1.pacificrack.com [216.144.225.250] over a maximum of 30 hops: 1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms ROUTER [192.168.29.1] 2 33 ms 21 ms 21 ms lns20.syd7.on.ii.net [150.101.199.219] 3 21 ms 22 ms 22 ms te3-1-120.cor2.syd6.on.ii.net [150.101.199.241] 4 168 ms 173 ms 189 ms ae5.br1.syd7.on.ii.net [150.101.33.50] 5 22 ms 25 ms 24 ms ae0.br1.syd4.on.ii.net [150.101.33.14] 6 168 ms 168 ms 168 ms te0-1-1-2.br2.lax1.on.ii.net [203.16.213.190] 7 168 ms 168 ms 167 ms bboi.net.any2ix.coresite.com [206.223.143.33] 8 570 ms 200 ms 197 ms 66.186.197.174 9 168 ms 168 ms 415 ms web1.pacificrack.com [216.144.225.250] Trace complete.
The route is obviously there. You can get to the LA POP to Quadranet via BBOI. It just seems that in this case, @serverian isn't getting advertised on that link.
Have you checked out our Seattle location?
Doesn't Linode have Tokyo location? Why don't you try that one.
Have you tried inbound vs outbound? It rights differently. 1 goes to HK / SG.
