Guide to setting up an email server on a vps?

Given the recent restrictions that are slowly going to be put in place on outlook.com (see http://lowendtalk.com/discussion/25238/microsoft-ending-offer-of-free-custom-domains-for-email-service ), I'm working on moving my stuff to a self-hosted email server.. which I have no idea how to setup. Anyone have a good guide?

Best way to install your own mail server without much knowledge.

How have you found anti-spam to be using:

"Amavisd: An interface between Postfix and SpamAssassin, ClamAV. Used for spam and virus scanning."

That's one of the major reasons I like Gmail.

  • An excellent guide from Ars Technica, in three parts, is available here. It explains everything from A to Z and it really enables you to add a lot of nice features to your mail server (including anti-spam).

    What?

  • Zimbra is pretty easy to install.

  • For personal email hosting: postfix, dovecot, spamprobe and some custom bash scripts for managing ongoing training. SpamAssassin, ClamAV and all the rest of that stuff is just bloatware :)

  • Make sure to use header checks in your postfix cf files. I've found them to be nearly equally as effective in spam checking as spamassassin.

Forgot to say, spamprobe is a bayesian filter and requires training, so don't delete your spam! Save it for training.

If you don't have enough spam, you can get more. Create a honeypot address or two, and put 'em in html comments on your websites for the crawlers. And use 'em to register at porn sites. This has an added bonus: if your wife/girlfriend catches you browsing porn, you can legitimately claim you're doing it only to protect her email from spam....

Linode also have a great guide for running Postfix and Dovecot ontop of MySQL (which then handles user accounts). You should think about completing it with this guide if you want an anti-spam filter, OpenDKIM to have your outgoing mail accepted by major mail providers, and some other cool things.

  • For anti-spam ASSP is much better than spamassassin or dspam. It intergrades scores of tests. I highly recommend it. (https://sourceforge.net/projects/assp/)

I have to echo @taronyu's suggestion of iredmail. It's just too easy to get up and running with it. The only bad part is that if you need some of the more advanced features of iRedAdmin, it's gonna cost you a pretty penny.

If I wasn't clear, I'll rephrase: using iredmail's setup, how is the antispam performance?

I run my email from virtualmin with the default setup. Any ideas how to improve email security / spam protection?
