Yaar, although some hosts do get shitty about it and will reject if they think you don't own the domain. Basically don't shove server1.google.com in there and you'll probably be ok.
I usually use nodomain@{alphanumerical string}.com. Something obscure that would never be registered normally.

If possible, I normally just name it something like testvps or debian without a .com or .net, but that's when the host allows you to name it without a web extension.
