    Thanked by 1vimalware
  • Prices look great for what you get, will use Rage4 partner program for a planned project.

  • What's your relationship with Softlayer?

It looks like ns1.r4ns.com and ns2.r4ns.com perform an extra lookup through Softlayer's infrastructure rather then using glue records.

none, we use it for all our domains (aka "do not put all your eggs into one basket")

  • gbshouse said: none, we use it for all our domains (aka "do not put all your eggs into one basket")

But all of your eggs are on one basket at the moment - Softlayer's. If their DNS went down then so would ns1.r4ns.com and ns2.r4ns.com - it's also causing a slight performance hit because you have to do an extra lookup at Softlayer to resolve your ns1 or ns2.

Why aren't their IPs in glue records like they should be?

  • gbshousegbshouse Member, Host Rep

@NickW - the glue records should be there (at least were there last time I've checked)

    Definately not.

At the moment most requests to your nameservers will first require querying Softlayer's DNS to get your anycast IPs. Instead, you should have them registered in glue and delegate ns1.r4ns.com and ns2.r4ns.com as authoritative servers.

@NickW - the glue for r4ns.com itself is not necessary as r4ns.com doesn't use NS within the same zone

Example for one of our customers - as you can see the "Additional section" with glue records is there

    You are correct, my apologies!

I'm used to seeing my query above respond with my glue zones since I have the NS in the same zone.

HOWEVER, the extra query will happen on all TLDs other than .com and .net

The way it is now, if Softlayer DNS goes down, only .com and .net will remain working, making a single point of failure, extra expense (Softlayer bill) and an extra lookup. There is no point in having your r4ns.com domain set up like this as you gain no redundancy from this domain being outside of your system.

  • gbshousegbshouse Member, Host Rep

@NickW - Softlayer is also using anycast and they have level of quality similar to Rage4. I'm not going to discuss our internal decisions regarding architecture and setup.

  • woo dnssec, good job!

  • I tried to switch to your company by setting vanity dns. I was able to do it with limited support and technical documentation. However, I wasn't happy with some routing and dns look up time. Trying your service just confirmed to me that DNSMadeEasy was easier, better and simpler to predict future cost. Also, I'm in the states and I avoid buying something in terms of Euro. I will consider it in the future. :)
