I have a spare dedicated server, what shall I do with it?

Hello,

I have a spare dedicated server and want to make some use out of it.

I'd like to make some money off of it but it's only cheap so something free is fine.

I want to provide something which will be useful...

Any ideas guys?

  • Set up Open VZ on it and try to sell some webspace to friends/family, either that or set up an awesome minecraft server

  • After the free porn you should make sure that it'll blend.

In all seriousness you could set up a private/public VPN, an adblocking DNS, or donate it's computing power to http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/ or http://lhcathome.web.cern.ch/ or http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/ .

YES start your own Host1Free VPS service, i got one i love it, can alway use another.

  • Use it for dogecoin.

  • I'd love to start free vps host but don't have a powerful enough server.

  • @painfreepc @fritz @elwebmaster

If you wanted free vps you'd have to find someone willing to donate a server to me or a really good offer.

Its certainty sonething I'd be interested in.

  • Run a Tor relay and help the poor buggers who have their government on their necks.

I use tor now and then and there are over 5000 for relays live and good.

  • make some kind of competition, then donate it to someone with best idea - to some opensource project, NGO, non-profit whatever

  • burn it

    There's still a bandwidth shortage, though :)

That said, if it's an OVH server, you probably should not run a TOR relay - they're known to be a bit finicky about it.

  • Its not OVH.

  • Maybe use it to mine some coins, like Quark (or its new fork Frozen), which is mostly just CPU mining. You can also mine things like Dogecoin, but not advised for only CPUs

  • Maybe mine cryptocurrencies.
Give away free shared hosting with a free panel.
Free vps is also always a good thing.

  • Just cancel it?

I think thats the best advice you'll get.

You have been opening a lot of threads trying to figure out what you wanna do with it
yet you never seem to make up your mind,
like rds100 said just cancel it.

You can spend that money on other things.

  • Donate it to charity.

Something I want to do but it's expensive and would be IPv6 Only.

just calculate how much it costs you for the server per year, divide by like 64-128MB RAM and you get how many IPv6 VPS you can host. Then set some reasonable price in line with lowendspirit and let people pay with bitcoins (so you don't get chargebacks). It's that simple.

Yeah you dont get chargebacks but you get spam.

  • Using Tor for yourself is not the same as running a relay for all to use without censorship.
Anyone can run a Tor relay. OVH may be finicky about Tor exits but not just relays.
And OVH didn't notice 10 Tor exits this year.
You can all run Tor relays. The more the merrier and the harder for the NSA and tyrants.
