Motivations

I think we as a community need to talk about a nice big word, motivation. It's the reason behind our actions. When you look at peoples actions in the lens of whatever may motivate them, you realize their actions may make more sense, or may be more easily brushed off, et cetera. I myself am motivated by things that may benefit me in the short or long term. That's probably why I have a folder full of incomplete scripts to download porn.

A really good case study is people's reactions of @BlueVM 's Feathur release. A lot of people praised it. Many of these people have motivations, such as enjoying the fact that there's now a new competitor, that it's license cost is lower than SolusVM's, that it provides an alternative to SolusVM. There's also people who have (possibly rightfully) tried to downplay it. Again, they have motivations to play here. Some have pride playing a role. Some dislike competition. Some (and I'd like to believe this is the case for an ultimately minimal amount of people) are just spiteful assholes.

I think we need to recognize those motivations for each person so that we can more effectively judge a person's actions.

Feathur is an automated porn downloader?

    IF das code works!!

thanks for the link BTW. You made by night :D

    ./aaao: line 3: [[: command not found
curl: try 'curl --help' or 'curl --manual' for more information

It doesn't work. It depends on a bunch of functions that I've not written yet. It's hard to work in the vicinity of hot pics, and by time I'm done with........ I am like "meh, maybe I'll finish it later."

Meh. Lots of sites use the same basic html structure. This site just had a couple things I fancied.

I propose that there are no selfless actions. At it's root, any action or decision whether private or public has to do with what one believes is most beneficial to themselves whether now or later. IMO everyone is motivated by selfish desires, some just involve pleasing others and the rest we call dicks. I enjoy helping others and making their lives easier but let's get to the reason...because it makes me feel good.

Motive is a difficult beast to tackle. We may not even always be aware of our own motivations and how they differ from the perception we've constructed. But yeah, it has everything to do with the base context of everything we do. I'm not sure where I'm going with this but I always enjoy a philosophical conversation ;)

  • My motivation: I like when the norm has been changed. For me, when I read that Feathur was released, I said to myself "awesome -- a group of folks who saw the need for an alternative to what 99% of LEB providers are using and made a software suite for this need" -- it takes some cojones(balls) to take your work, have it audited for problems, fix problems, and release, and rinse and repeat over and over again.

Do I think Feathur will benefit me in the future? It's possible, but not in my road map yet, as I would still need to tinker with it and ensure that it can do what my client expects. At any rate, I hope that these folks continue their work, as I cannot see why Solus and Feathur cannot share market space in the future, and that is a large part of my praise for what the BlueVM team has done.

  • And what's the motivation for this thread?

Yep, whenever I donate/help someone, I feel good. Then I feel less bad using other people's work, once i do contribute to some projects. Feeling good extends lifespan and makes life bearable.
Makes the old joke "life sucks, but at least it is short" less relevant.
And a bit of philosophy does not hurt on this board, especially related to the subjects of the day/FOSS/software writing/contributions, etc.

Seriously, try me. The starting at rate is $30 a week, but for many work loads, it stays right around there.
