Remote hard reset on consumer hardware
Hi guys,
I built a backup server using a Pro WS X570-ACE motherboard which has some remote management capabilities which requires some ASUS Control Center appliance I don't really wan't to use therefore I'm now looking for other options.
Does anyone have such a ACC compatible motherboard and is using it's remote features with or without the CC appliance ?
What would be an alternative ? I was thinking about shorting the reset pins on the motherboard, there has to be some device to do that ? Any ideas ?

You need:
Upon receiving a request (it could be HTTP request, MQTT message, etc), the microcontroller connects then disconnects the relay, simulating the effect of pressing the reset button.
Cheapest microcontroller for the job is ESP8266.
A benefit over Raspberry Pi is that it consumes less power.
It requires 3.3V power supply, or 5V via USB.
You can connect it to a set of spare USB pins on the motherboard.
Raspberry Pi uses 3.3V logical level.
I can't find information regarding logic level (voltage) of the Pro WS X570-ACE motherboard.
If it's not 3.3V, you cannot connect directly.
You'll need a relay switch or a level shifter.
In typical ASUS fashion, the BMC seems to be completely undocumented and the agent only runs on Windows. No reverse engineering effort seems to have been started either.
If you don't want to run Windows, you're probably better off implementing the KVM functionality yourself.
You don't need to apply the voltage, you just need to short the pins. for which you could use a switch
Are you wanting something that will actually work well? Get a server motherboard.
For sure though you could hack an ESP based solution, or buy a PCI-e KVM card but will you trust it remotely?
This depends on how "remote" it is.
If it's in my basement / closest, it's enough.
If it's in on a TV tower that I need to drive an hour and climb 500 steps to get to, it's too risky.
If it's in a colo faculty, it's not going to work anyways because there's no WiFi.
It also depends on how much you care about electrical fires, or your cloud escaping the hardware components. (Including the potential liability issues arising from that. Sure Its gonna be fine a good percentage of the time. Then again, its quite a business risk.).
There are cards with ethernet
Any remote access power outlet and the bios changed to: Power after outage- Always On
If this is for your home (less reliable but cheap AF) even a $10 power switch outlet connected to Alexa or Google.

Yep. I've spliced sonoff basics directly into the power cord for that.
If just want remote KVM. Look into a Lantronix Spider. Sometimes you can get them on a deal.
That is what we have for clients that don't have actual KVM options built into the motherboard.

There are lots of devices that connect to the internet and will give you a dry contact closure (i.e. relay, GPO) that you can wire to the reset header.

We're bundling the new AsRock Rack PAUL cards with smart PDU's and from initial testing it seems to be working just fine. The PAUL IPMI PCIe card lacks power controls (obviously), but implements all of the other IPMI functionality just fine.
