Facebook takes out newspaper ads attacking Apple and funds antitrust lawsuit against Apple app store.

Microsoft pushes for the US to require payments to news sources that are Google-sampled.

What next? Amazon takes on @Francisco?

All that plus their efforts to compete with the great firewall of China are setting up for an interesting year.

All empires have one clear thing in common, they all fall. Perhaps the industry is written in stone and the companies are the top will stay there for eternity... also perhaps not.

I think they've reached a stage where each tech company is a bit too big. They have too many products and are unfocused-- but you have to be to justify a 1-2 trillion dollar valuation, as there is no single product or industry you can be in to get that big.

Even AWS has literally 100+ different services! You need to spend a month to learn the differences between all of them! What's Lightsail vs EC2? What is Gamelift?

Now, they're realizing there isn't enough space for everyone, and the oceans are turning from blue to red.

Just oh no. Those little things are amazing showing me only what I need to see, instead of searching thru the entire article..

I do not like agreeing with @jar - but on this he is right. Empires rise, empires fall.

In my opinion the reason is actually human greed from birth (when babies suck so much milk, without control, throwing-up later), until adulthood (when we want to control a person by marriage, or the whole world by desire of rich and power), and even until death (when we dream of everlasting and never-ending life in green pastures).

When an empire falls, other will rise to take it's place. History will always repeat itself, because we never learn.

    EDIT: The end is nigh.

I am not an Apple fanboy and I only bought like two of their products old and secondhand, but I don't really see a negative to what they're doing here (note: not commenting on app store, but... you know what you are getting into prior to buying it)

Facebook on the other hand has been doing nothing but complaining about "why can't we steal more data from users" like a child

Well then don't because I don't like you agreeing with me either. See you on the playground, hope the teachers don't look away!

I don't care about any teachers. I thought you realized it by now.

Nietzsche identified life a playground where we are all children, but there were no teachers in his philosophy.

I think it's more along the lines of sucking in air while drinking from your back. That, and I've seen babies spit up after barely drinking any. I think "greed" is a bit much to describe a growing newborn feeding.

  • I'm sure this is all from Apple giving Facebook a price in billions per year and Facebook balked. Facebook has secret access to internal permissions for years.

It'll be resolved once those billions transfer from Facebook to Apple.

Usually in battles both sides get weakened, so I very much welcome any battle between the "titans". Wrt Apple I don't care but facebook and twitter need to be brought down.

Facebook, YouTube, and Netflix work together to challenge TikTok.

  • 30% fees are too unfair specially when apple gives exception to Netflix ,prime while charging Spotify who is a real competitor to apple music. After apple tv(plus?) Gets big appple will do same to Netflix and prime and probably Amazon will sue apple and stop selling iphones just like it did to Chromecast and google discontinued firestick android app?

Do you have any idea how much porn is hosted on our slabs? I don't have a figure but I'll safely assume a lot.

One of the issues with Apple is that they're giving their own apps special access. Even if they control data access from third-party apps, their own first-party apps can still access the same data without requesting permission, and use that to create an ad profile for their own ad network in the same way that Google, Facebook, etc would (yes, Apple have an ad network. It's quite small but I hear they're going to try and expand it).

    https://www.forbes.com/sites/johnkoetsier/2020/08/07/apple-ad-network-gets-special-privileges-that-facebook-google-wont-on-ios14/?sh=3b2971cf7515

Maybe that's fine because they own the platform, but don't think that Apple aren't doing the same things that other companies are doing. They can just be sneakier about it.

Opposite, tos say dick pics are required.

  • Eventually the market will sort all these players out. However the market could take quite a while to do so.

Apple: With the position they have as one of the most used mobile devices and mobile being king, the public needs access to another app store so they cant randomly kick off apps from the device. They can continue to moderate their own store as they please. Some new platform could come along to dethrone them but who knows how long that will take.

Google: As it is its the number one search engine. All the power they have seems to be tied to that but if that were to change they would be tamed. They are seem to be manipulating search results for ideological reasons now. As for android and play store: Same way BlackBerry became irrelevant and Windows Phone became irrelevant they can become irrelevant in With Android. Maybe Linux Phones are he answer long term. But how long would that take?

Microsoft: Used to be the big bad wolf. But not like before. I'm not sure they are doing anything scary like they did before. There staff is similarly ideological but seem to make less headlines than the others from what i'm aware.

Amazon: Probably worried about being broken up eventually. They just are in too many industries.

Facebook: When Apple and Google went after Parler, Minds, Gab they did nothing. They are also going after Clubhouse now. Facebook has no moral authority here. It seems to me that they may have to pay Apple for the data they collect. In the meantime are they going to help promote alternatives to Apple like Linux phones?

Twitter: Most of the political discussion originates here currently but as they ban more and more people and limit more and more things you discuss other platforms will emerge to fill the gap. Again do we have a decade to wait? A new twitter CEO who will promise reforms when a competing platform emerges that has their own infrastructure from phone to server.
