  • seems syncany is client.

for personal use, i will just have keypair between my desktop and vps. then have a script to rsync to my vps. maybe cron the script also

  • what im going to do is I would like to install the open source cloud storage for providing the storage to all of my colleges. So they can do sync from any gadget and computer. But the problem is I can not find the software that has almost same feature with dropbox.

I use mostly AjaXplorer but that's not exactly sync dropbox-like solution. It work great as collaborative file storage but sync option is still in beta phase. You can check limited demo here: https://demo.ajaxplorer.info/

Other self hosted dropbox like solutions:
http://seafile.com/ (some people prefer it over OwnCloud) Demo: https://seacloud.cc/home/my/
    http://sparkleshare.org/

OwnCloud annoys me at many aspects. Slowness with bigger number of smaller files, upload can take days and there's no progress bar. Sync client can't be used with multiple OwnCloud instances (+/-some workaround). Constant 24/7 check for files modifications on both, client and remote side (leave my CPU alone!) ....

Agree with the cons of owncloud, I will check the sparkleshare.

    iOS client for seafile: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/seafile-pro/id639202512?mt=8

    All sync clients: http://www.seafile.com/en/download/

  • will be installed on the vmware environment, will see how good the feature is.

  • Or use BoxCryptor Classic with Dropbox. I haven't found software (including the ones mentioned) that could match Dropbox's syncing capabilities nor BoxCryptor's encryption.

What features you need from Dropbox? There are quite many..

I had similar problem about year ago. I tested owncloud, seafile, sparkleshare, aerofs, tahoefs, duplicity+glacier and a quite bunch another softwares. My requirements are auto-sync from several linux/win-machines behind NAT, hundreds gigabytes of storage (RAW-images mainly) and backups somehow.

Current solution is BT sync at every machine and ajaxplorer at home server. I have around 20 different shares, at home server they are located at same parent directory and ajaxplorer workspace is that folder so it shows every file from BT sync. Some VPS are utilized as backup-devices with read-only shares. Going strong..

Edit. and few mins after posting BT announces that iOS-client is available. Have to test that. I'm still using dropbox to serve PDF-files: iOS-dropbox client can show/handle nicely even big PDF-files.

  • One of feature is I can share my doc with another user on the public area, can seafile provide it ?

BT sync for transfer and AjaXplorer as backend - picking the best for both. Interesting setup.

For most people the most important feature are smart multi-device sync and stable frontend interfaces. If sync works well and the linux/mac/windows/android/whatever interface don't keep crashing on you when you need it then it's a good product.

    How stable is seafile?

And this is working like a charm. Initial seeding image-share to server was around 100Gb, no hiccups. And after that 20k small files, no problems. Transfer speed at LAN was constant all the time.

Tested quickly new BT iOS-client, seems to be awesome and does everything that iOS-dropbox does. So goodbye to size-limits and sluggish download/upload-speeds. And because all files are really downloaded to client, files work offline also (which dropbox doesn't allow even file is already present. Tested.).

Of course you can use any file browser/manager or several, samba mount, even owncloud as it uses file backend, but ajaxplorer seems to be rather nicely working one even files are changing background. Eg now I can download a single ISO-file directly from LAN-server's browser-interface without blowing whole bt-share to my computer.

Server is nice one, linux-client was a bit odd (local webserver and other stuff, not so easy to read UI, crashing sometimes), windows-client OK, but biggest problem for me was that is based to git (as well sparkleshare is) and it won't work well with big binary files (due how git works). For source codes git perfect (and the best) choice.

  • So the better one is ajaxplorer ?

Really depends what you want do with it. But luckily there is a demo where you can play with ajaxplorer to get some idea how it works and what can be done: https://demo.ajaxplorer.info/

  • I can't say better. Each one is different. With pluses and minuses.
I would suggest you to try all and pick the one which is most suitable for you. AjaXplorer is not perfect either, you may miss some features and some will just annoy you, but it's most suitable solution for my personal usage.
If OwnCloud sync of bigger number of smaller files wouldn't be so damn slow and constantly do "something" (full recalculation of hashes on every file from scratch) when client and server reconnect, timeouts in those recalculations again and again from beginnning... it would be my choice.
@Pertti solved one of AjaXplorer flaws with using BitTorrent Sync to sync files between devices and store them into AjaXplorer but with shares from BT Sync that's not perfect either if you want to use AjaXplorer encryption plugin (with EncFS FUSE driver to encrypt files).

There's no perfect solution, it's just more suitable and less suitable regarding your needs.

Why not? Place encrypted files to btsync-share folder (or share existing crypted folder) and everything works as usually except you can automatically share encrypted files to selected devices. I haven't tested this, but if it works with dropbox, it should work with btsync also. All traffic with btsync is already encrypted so data is only readable at destinations by default. But for sensitive data encfs is good idea.

I may be wrong but doesn't BT sync store files into AjaXplorer folder unencrypted unless they were encrypted locally before transfer of course?
I haven't tryed BT sync yet but I think that I was reading somewhere that while BT sync transfer data safely (encrypted traffic) they are stored unencrypted.

(and encryption plugin in AjaXplorer 5.0.2 to do it manually from AjaXplorer is broken anyway)

Yes, I was just thinking of that also, encrypted storage options(as transit is suppose to be)-- someone could just use some kinda crypt on the fs to help that I suppose(not a total solution, but part of a multi angle solution)? I just installed btsync on a FreeNAS instance I have running, and connected the phone via QR and have already synced about 500mb of 1.5gb of pics/vids. For me, I am just happy to be able to back up the phone and possibly a few other clients - having a web explorer would be great, so I guess I will have to try out ajaxexplorer. So far, I would have to say this is easier than running an installation wizard on the owncloud platform, but that just imho :)

  • Thank you for all answer and suggestion, im going to install ajaxplorer on ubuntu 12.04.
I think ajaxplorer is more suitable for my needs.
