Anyone know of a non-U.S. based company that hosts VMWare "VMDK" VM "images"..?

Hello there..

We are looking to host a VMWare "VMDK" Workstation image on a remote server anywhere in Canada or Europe.

One of the only companies we've found that does this well is this one, but they're U.S. based: https://www.vmdkhosting.com
(link provided as an example only, we have nothing to do with them)

Our budget is sufficient but as we are working with the legal/medical cannabis industry in Canada, we cannot host our VM's with a company based in the U.S.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

  • You can always use vagrant, or you can always convert it to other format.

It seems like OVH has support for this but we can't find much documentation or support.

    https://www.vmware.com/ca/cloud-services/infrastructure.html

  • options 1,
rent dedicated server, install VMware vSphere ESXi and deploy your image to that server. If your VM doesn't use more than 8vCPU on 1 VM and you don't need any advanced VMware feature such as HA etc then you can use free ESXi license. ESXi free license have limitations :

    • only work on server with 1 or 2 CPU Socket
    • cannot managed by vCenter
    • maximum 8vCPU per VM
    • no support from VMware

just remember you need to know about VM Hardware Version to make sure you can run your VMware Workstation VM on ESXi server ( https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/1003746 )

also when you rent dedicated server make sure you got :
    1. access to BIOS to enable virtualization support
    2. at least 2 IP Address per hosts, 1 IP Adress for esxi host management and 1 IP Address for your VM that act as a router ( or you can ask for more IPs so each VM got their own public IP Address ).
    3. minimum RAM is your need + 4GB of RAM for vsphere ESXi.
    4. SSD will be better and RAID will help you for any disk failure
    5. backup plan for your data

    options 2,
search and contact vmware cloud provider partner ( https://cloud.vmware.com/providers/search-result ) , search based on location so you can select country and on service check on infrastructure as a services.

I will only use options 2 if you have a lot of VM or need some advanced features or have other requirements such as need HIPAA compliance etc.

OVH maybe can provide what you need because they bough vcloud air from vmware few years ago but I never know any details on OVH.

This is kind of confusing, many of these companies that will remotely host a VMWare VM seem to be set up to provide desktop-as-a-service to 100+ employees at a time.

    We only need one.

  • Don't ask for services to install VMware workstation, they will offer you windows vm or if they don't understand your requirement they will offer desktop as a service using VMware horizon view. This is not what you want.

You need to ask them services to deploy your vm image on their infrastructure as a service. They will need to offer deploy those vm images on their VMware vsphere infrastructure.

If you not familiar with VMware line of products I will suggest find VMware cloud provider on your local so you can setup a meeting with them and show them your vm in VMware workstation and ask them how to deploy those vm to their services.

hit me with a pm and describe me what you exactly need, maybe we can deploy it on our esxi hypervisors.

    Cheers dream

    One? The op said "VM's".

Most likely, you're tying yourself to the vmdk format when you really shouldn't.
