Create Your Own Self-Hosted Mailinator with inbucket

raindog308raindog308 Administrator, Veteran

Came across a very cool project and wrote it up as a tutorial for LEB:

https://lowendbox.com/blog/create-your-own-self-hosting-mailinator-with-inbucket/

Been using it for a month or so and it's worked great. Lots of places have apparently heard of mailinator and block signups, but with your own domain and self-hosted inbucket, you can cut down on junk email to your inbox.

    Awesome. Thanks.

  • Any way to add extensive logging? I can imagine this project causing a lot of abuse even to a point law enforcement asks for ips and dates if this allows sending anything.

  • @stefeman said: sending anything

I don't think you can reply - this is a receive only inbox (as I understand at least).

    Nice.

    Guess it's a good self-hosted alternative for https://temp-mail.org/.

There are logging levels...I haven't played with them. See the configurator:

    https://www.inbucket.org/configurator/

But as @nullnothere points out, there is no replying. It's designed to replicate Mailinator, etc. where you use it for those "confirm your email to continue" kinds of things or where you want to give out a throwaway email.

  • @raindog308 Good one. Till date I was using a catch all mailbox with a cheap domain will try these out.

  • Do you actually need a domain name for this if you just want to receive mails?

    Yes.

Why? My google foo turned up that when you send emails without domain name you will end up in spam filters but it would work in principle. For receiving mails it should also work in principle, question is if whoever you register with allows sending mails to mail@ipaddress .

I never thought of using email@[###.###.###.###], but apparently it generally works, at least for receiving emails.

I just tested it and yes, sending to someone@IP_ADDRESS works.

Whether the typical web page that validates if you entered a genuine email address will allow you to sign up like that is another issue. My guess is that most won't validate it, so practically speaking, yes you need a domain.

404 then error establishing database. I think @jbiloh is breaking WordPress.

Yeah we updated to WP 5.5 today and that broke comments on LowEndBox.

We are trying to restore a cpanel backup from this morning, and go figure, cpanel is borked. So working on that now.
