Hetzner Finland 2 years later - how's the network?
If my memory hasn't failed me, it's a bit over 2 years since Hetzner opened their DC in Finland. Early on it seemed like the network reviews were fairly negative as they were backhauling most traffic through Germany.
I'm wondering how things are looking now network-wise for those that have servers in Helsinki?
Is the ~5 eur/mo savings on dedicated servers a killer deal at this point, or is it still better to spend the extra money for a server in Germany?
From the US, the biggest variance I'm seeing on some routes is like +15ms - which is minimal overhead when you're already talking 100-160ms to DE. So I'm interested in hearing opinions from those of you in the EU and elsewhere on the network quality in FI.
Comments
Peformance from FI to Netcup is really slow, 150GB takes hours to transfer. Now i first copy it to my Hetzner DE storagebox and then to my Netcup server.
Ping time from the Netherlands home wifi is DE 23ms vs FI 45ms
I run a few servers in finland. I Max the 1gbit to and from norway 24/7 if i want to, no problem. Ping to finland is +-14 for me, vs +-40 to germany.
This is, however, probably as expected. Almost every ISP in The Netherlands has a peering agreement with Hetzner. This means the AS path will always be the shortest directly to Hetzner, but this means it goes through Nuremberg.
RTT to Falkenstein for me is 16m, to Helsink it's 37ms. Finnish providers with direct routes from Amsterdam (mostly through Northern Germany/Denmark) are ~30ms.
I was trying to use from Asia and had bad pings ~330ms, so I switched back to FR DC a month ago.
I live in Finland, so its obviously perfect for me xD
Worse than before, I remember at some point I had 40ms to them, but now they went to the trouble of getting a private peering with my ISP, only to waste that with their routing
through Baghdad, up to 67ms now.If Hetzner gets an abuse from someone, they just delete you server or ban your account? Could someone explain it to me?
Both Asian and US networks get worse ping to Finland than Germany. A lot of factors contribute there. Is is worth for the 5€ discount? Nope.
See this: https://www.hetzner.com/unternehmen/rechenzentrum/
(7 total transit/peer providers directly out of Helsinki, but a whole lot more directly out of Germany)
Very simple, really.
The bigger (more successful) the company, the more restrictive the acceptable use policy and the itchier the trigger finger towards even minor indiscretions.
Theoretically, at least, LET is supposed to mitigate this effect by encouraging new providers.
So, tell me, where are these new providers hiding....?
dead pool
It's dark, but true - tough market to compete in
Except this is not the case.. Hetzner Finland gets routed AMS -> STO -> HEL over our direct peering with them in AMS.
Being a Ziggo customer, I see they do not peer with Hetzner - but they carry me over Telia (AMS -> STO -> HEL) to their Helsinki site.
There's no German grounds involved anywhere. Ingress that is: I have no box in Finland to confirm the other way around.
Thanks to mtr.sh/ @dfroe : way back to the next hop of our mutual peering takes the same route above in reverse : HEL -> STO -> AMS. Thanks.
But there is mtr.sh
there Cloud Servers in Finland seem to be V Good the Network ,use them for a number of clients sites / applications,
but Nuremberg is still my best in my opinion,
Okay, that's interesting. Seems that outbound routing goes through Germany here, but inbound goes directly to Amsterdam.
Good to see that they've improved their AMS - HEL connectivity. Consistent routing would be even better .
Ziggo inbound routing goes through Frankfurt via TATA. So that's 2 for inconsistency.
There probably is, Telia cables run through Hamburg but we just don't see it .
Since your ISP is already in Stockholm, ask them to join either STHIX or NetNod, Hetzner peers at both and it's a shorter path than routing through Frankfurt.
