OVH public cloud $150 free credit (and fail)

OVH is offering $150 free credit for its public cloud with terms I copy-pasted below. I'm guessing the currency is AUD since I signed up via ovh.com.au.

Halfway through the signup process, I was asked my country of residence, and in the list of choices were Asian countries with Australia not in it. Without the correct country, my address and phone number wouldn't be right.

Why do they keep making elementary user interface mistakes like this. What happens if they make this kind of mistake with my billing for example.

Meh.

Terms:
(1) This special offer gives you a promo code that provides credit available to use on any Public Cloud instance. Promo code is provided upon request by filing the form or by calling our Asia-Pacific Sales team. This credit can be used on any first-time orders of Public Cloud instances placed between 07th July 2020, 10:00 GMT, and 21st July 2020, 13:00 GMT. This special offer is limited to one subscription per NIC handle, and can only be used if you do not yet have any Public Cloud projects. The discount provided by the promo code is applicable for a duration of two (2) months from the date on which it is activated, and is automatically deducted from your next bill. You need to have a valid payment method saved on the OVHcloud Control Panel. This credit does not have any monetary value, and cannot be exchanged, transferred or refunded. Cannot be used in conjunction with any other special offers applicable to the service. To subscribe, you will need to accept the OVHcloud contractual conditions.

(2) If accepted, the data communicated via this form will be collected by OVH SAS acting as a data controller. It may be transmitted solely for the purposes described below to other entities of the OVH group, and to subcontractors acting in the name of, on behalf of and at the direction of OVH. In this case, OVH SAS ensures that a sufficient protection mechanism is in place. As such, data transfers to entities of the OVH group located outside the European Union are governed by OVH's binding company rules. The data is processed for a period of 36 months with your consent, in order to provide you with offers concerning the infrastructures, products and services offered by the OVH group.

And sell to whoever they want, they will. Who knew.

  • I heard Australia has usage charge/limit like cell phone for regular internet service.
I guess it is a mistake or business decision to not include AUS.

Yes, for the most part. Even the unlimited ones come with caveat (like getting less than the advertised speed during peak hours).

There's nothing wrong with not including a country. The problem is that a front page and a form say the country is included, while another form says the country is not. Which gives the impression that is an elementary UI mistake.

    Hello @woteti,
It looks like you have registered to our Asia website instead of our australian website.
    to summarize:
for Australia and NZ residents only --> https://www.ovhcloud.com/en-au/ (billing in AUD)
for Singapore (or Asean) residents --> https://www.ovhcloud.com/en-sg/ (billing in SGD)
for Asean residents --> https://www.ovhcloud.com/asia/ (billing in USD)

    hope this helps

    @OVH_APAC
    Thanks for clarifying.
Three links are confusing at first, but not when you click and see the offers.

In fact because there is same name for currency , but different exchange rates , it would have made it more confusing.

@OVH_APAC thanks for the clarification, I will try again later.
I was brought to the form by one of the confirmation emails, which I received after signing up on ovh.com.au.

2 different links in the same welcome email will bring me to 2 different url (see attached image):
    (1) https://ca.ovh.com/auth/?action=gotomanager&from=https://www.ovh.com.au/&ovhSubsidiary=au
    (2) https://ca.ovh.com/auth/?onsuccess=https://ca.ovh.com/manager/public-cloud/#/pci/projects/onboarding&ovhSubsidiary=ASIA

I possibly used link (2) yesterday. Now my business email is stuck at "asia" signup and can't be used for a new signup, while my personal email won't be accepted.

Anyway, I give up. May other more fortunate souls benefit from my feedback.

    Good luck with the promo!

In the rules, it states under "Things We Do Not Allow," "spam five quick... replies to get to the limit." Then again, the following phrase is only "it disappoints us." ;)

I don't know. My email address is still stuck at the signup step I mentioned above til today.

The rep @OVH_APAC who replied to this thread was kind enough to offer me a manual override via PM, and I PM'ed my email back in reply. Nothing changes, my email address is still stuck.

So technically speaking, even if I want to become a paying customer without the free trial/credit, I can't. And if the other product lines (dedis, etc) require me to go through the same steps, then I can't use those other offerings as well.

I see that the 2 links in the welcome email were fixed though, so I'm glad my feedback could help others.

They failed for a client of mine too. After waiting over a fortnight for a response to the final stage (mailto link with questionnaire) this response was received.

    Successfully eliminated themselves from consideration.
