Testing SoftShellWeb's 12$/year tiny NL vps

umiumi Member

Hi everyone! As a long time reader, I have found here, on LET, huge amount of insights to make my and my client's web hosts faster and solid. Thank you, all!
I had couple of servers on Aruba to do tests, and as private proxy. One in Arezzo, and one in Ktys. They were stellar performers for more that 2 years. (1G RAM 20G SSD 1TB/month via 1Gbit/s). I don't know the reasons why Aruba is increasing prices, as my both vps with them used less than 1% of traffic & cpu and were sitting 99.9% of time idle. As exodus from Aruba I tried this great offer from SoftShellWeb:
CPU: ½ Core @ 2.6 Ghz
RAM: 256 Mb
DISK: 15 GB SSD
Bandwidth: 2000 GB @ 1 Gbps (connection speed is limited to 20Mbit when bandwidth exceeded)
DDoS Protection 600+ Gbps
1x Dedicated IPv4
1x IPv6 /64 Subnet
for $12.00/year which is superb.

The initial attempt to order has failed and Cloudflare said that it cannot connect to somewhere and please try it again. I tried and the same thing happened again. I opened up a ticket and support answered withing an hour (which is amazing for saturday 18:00UTC ) and said to disable adblock. Which I did and this time all went ok. This is first time that my adblock prevented me from ordering a hosting ;)

I reinstalled Debian 10 from control panel and started testing.
Ipv6 is working out of the box.
The network quota, connectivity and speed is very good. But it seems that disk IO is capped at
20MB/s which is not in SSD league at all.
Of course it's just $1/month, but my another low end vps is just 22EUR/year from https://minikvm.com/ and inside it is just OVH server near Frankfurt and is literally flying.

The ping time across Europe is excellent. To Johannesburg 180ms, to Beijing 168ms (surprise here, as other Chinese provinces are in 250-300ms range), Singapore 158-180ms,HK 200ms, L.A. 142ms, Australia >300ms.
ipv6 is faster for some places.

Opened up a ticket with low priority for uncapping disk IO.
So far I think, SoftShellWeb is an excellent provider for the price paid.
I'll let you know how this vps will run with time.
Thanks!

Damm Papillon Soo Soo, $12 is cheap. I like cheap.

Is that thing dependable for blogging on Wordpress or for building a commercial landing page?

  • umiumi Member

Nope. For wordpress you'll need at least 512MB RAM to squeeze MYSQL&webserver&php.

But static landing page may work quite well.

Ticket was answered (on sunday!) and now disk IO speed has increased to 68MB/s which is better.

  • qmessoqmesso Member

@umi I don't see the offer you are writing about on their page SoftShellWeb

They sell it as NVMe? Could still be NVMe of course, but this would still be heavily capped.

Normal SSD, the NVME one is 10 GB.

Of course Aruba's servers are way more beefy, and even for 2.79EUR/m are still decent, but in Europe there are more sweet deals now, like https://minikvm.com for 1.33-1.83EUR/m (paid annually). For my usage I'd like to have 3 servers for $1.6 instead of 1 for $5. To make tiny CDN from them. More tests:

88RUB/m(1.1EUR) for 500GB of bandwidth, sitting just across Amur river with China has an excellent connectivity with China Telecom and China Unicom but not with China Mobile. China mobile can be well served from Japan ($3/m for comparable 500GB of bandwidth). Please explain me China-optimized term on US West coast hostings? I just don't get it. Maybe it was nice to have ping of 150-200ms from China some time ago, but now there are more links up and running within region. Even SoftShellWeb pings Beijing 168ms from Wormer,NL, via RETN I guess. https://ping.chinaz.com/ http://webkaka.com/Ping.aspx are nice tools to ping your host from different places in China. Surprisingly, free version of cloudflare is not good here, as they have start struggling even on dns level and have they own China special thing.

Tinykvm (RamNode ). 1 k visitors per day when I used it. Blog, haven't tried woo

Thanks for the review of softshellweb, and BM. Helpful read.

  • You're welcome! It was a long time ago in may ;)
In tight memory the decent sized shop use swap a lot and that's no good for ssd health. Granted that ssd and even nvme ssd are very fast so swap usage will not affect performance much but it's life must be spared in respect to the host at least ;)
