Recommend Used 1U Server to Upgrade for Database Storage

Thinking of grabbing a used 1U server with 8-10 bays that I will repurpose into a database server. Will most likely discard the existing low-capacity memory modules and load up 128-256GB of DDR3. As this is still a database server that will also perform some data crunching and not a pure storage system, having the ability to upgrade the processor will be a plus if it comes with one that turns out to be underpowered.

What 1U models will you recommend for such a purpose?

Was looking at a SUPERMICRO SYS-1026T-6RFT+ with dual Xeon X5650, 8 x 8GB DDR3 and 2x700W PSU for $350. Will not be using any of the drives that comes with it, putting in all new drives. Will like this model more if it could squeeze in 2 more drive bays. What do you think about this?

Thanks

this is a nightmare of power consumition.... just my 2 cents , HP first , dell after. NO way supermicro.

Thanks for the heads up on high power consumption. Is most of it coming from the 95W TDP processors?

If so, which series of processors do you suggest that are more power efficient?

L5640's are quite a bit more efficient

  • You can get Dell PowerEdge R620s for fairly cheap on ebay, that's what I'd go with.

Don't waste your time with the Dual Xeon X5650, they are old, they are power hungry, and with their age, you're going to have reliability issues long term. Pick up a Ryzen 3700X instead, it's a much better investment long term with NVMe support.

Will you suggest getting a barebones R620 chassis to install a Ryzen 3700X and ASRock Rack X570 mITX motherboard? Or are there better chassis?

Wondering whether to choose the ASRock Rack for the IPMI, or get a regular X570 board without IPMI...

The good X570 boards are more expensive than the ASRockRack boards with IPMI.

Get a board with IPMI onboard, don't use a desktop board, they are not meant to sit in a racked environment.
