    SSD though :)

Well if use local storage it would be microsd card.
I do agree of some sort of network storage would be ideal!

Would a usb3.0 ssd give you decent read/write speeds? over say a 3.0 thumb drive?

Frankly, a cheap walmart quality USB external would do wonders, and the raspberry pi can power one of them with ease. I've got some of these lying around that I've used with great results:

    https://www.walmart.com/ip/Toshiba-Canvio-Basics-1TB-Portable-External-Hard-Drive-USB-3-0-Black-HDTB410XK3AA/771097773

I mean we're talking about a raspberry pi here, we don't need enterprise datacenter grade fancy stickers on a disk that say "I last 60 years" with confidence. Unlikely to be anyone's production box without backup.

    BeagleBone Black
    1 ARMv7 core
    512MB RAM
    2TB HDD over SAMBA
    100Mbps link shared
    0 IPv4
    1 IPv6

    Raspberry Pi Zero W
    1 ARMv6 core
    512MB RAM
    32GB SD card
    11Mbps link with radio interference
    0 IPv4
    1 IPv6
1 camera to watch me naked

These are my closet host, and it costs $0, although Verizon FiOS is too expensive.

No need to send anything to Texas.

yoursunny: I am not saying that everyone will use the service.
jar: True. could do that as well. Might be better to do it that route instead of the bigger microsd card.d

On the pi4, you need an actually decent power supply going into the pi itself or it'll randomly power off or die. This is aggravating because phone chargers/etc all don't do this well.

I just use the power cable I got in a kit from amazon. It’ll do one fine but if I add a second I need a powered hub.

"Y'all" is a thing, "yaw" is not. That's like when people hear something and repeat it without knowing what they are saying (generally, songs). In Enter Sandman, there is a line "exit light, enter night". When I was a kid, I thought it was like, "accelite", which wasn't a word, but just went with it until I was in my 20's and was like, "oh, no shit" and SMH that I never clued in sooner.

This is one of my worries about pi colo - providers might buy an anker hub or something and plug a dozen USB cables in and that works somewhat ok for a rpi1 and its low spec, but once you're allowing any external peripherals or even two flash drives on a rpi4, you're effectively going to be consuming a brick per pi.

Power sags/drops also are not very good for the sd card.

I completely agree. I got a few units on order and the official poe hats. I am going to try. If I notice issues with the hats. I will get the official USB-C plugs.

So decided to go with the poe hat. Will do a couple hour "burn in" to test and make sure it can handle the load.

    https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Raspberry_Pi_as_third_node

This doesn't look too promising. However, this is going to see a new open source version released for the RPI4:

    https://antsle.com/products/antmanedgelinux/

They just started selling RPI4s with their non-community version of their OS preinstalled for $547 (includes 512G storage). If the community version is any good, could make a really interesting thing to host.

The Antsle product is pretty neat but way too pricey. I've been keeping my eye on their RPi line. So time will tell on that.

I heard about proxmox incorporating RPis into their line but didn't really dig too deep into it.

Just realized I missed the "s" at the end of RPIServers
*Edited the post to fix the "s" problem.

    Test IP too please.

    DM, here, wherever :)

  • Interested to take one of these for a spin, but you’ve done IPv6 wrong so will go with home colo.

If you fixed that, and offered better storage (USB or SAN, for which I’d be prepared to pay more) you’d have a really nice offer here.

Hey if you want to send me a drive to plug into the usb port. I will gladly do that for you.
What do you have in mind? I am always open to ideas!
I am working on a SAN solution as well as I have seen the need for this across the other products offered.

  • @AlienData_Josh

    Few questions:
    1. What type of SDcard are you using, more specifically the 256GB SDcard, are they at least A1, to allow for decent IO?
    2. When you say "unmetered bandwidth" is that at 100Mbit or Gigabit and what do you consider "Fair Share" usage (1TB, 6TB, 10TB, 33TB)?
    3. What is the time period on ROI for these, 6 months? Longer? Are you offering 3-6 month term discount or is this the bare minimum cost to get your money back in a reasonable time?
    4. Do you provide any type of panel to manage hard reset of the board if needed or do you have to ticket to get the board reset if it has an issue?
    5. Do you charge for OS reload ( I assume this is a manual process )?
    6. Is there a cost associated if we need remote-hands for some reason?

All of this is likely important to anyone considering such a service and no where on the site is any of this information addressed or outlined at all, so you may want to consider updating the site to include all of this going forward as well as the actual DC location which is also not mentioned anywhere on the site.

    my 2 cents.

    Cheers!

    1. SanDisk 16GB Ultra MicroSDHC UHS-I and SanDisk 256GB Ultra MicroSDHC UHS-I cards are used.
    2. Would be nice to stay under 50-100Mbps sustained. But you can burst.
3.I have prices on the website for out to a year. The prices are even through the months. No discount for going month to month over paying for the full year.
    3. If something happens like a reset please submit a ticket.
    4. Manual reload for OS changes.
    5. Depends on what is needed and time frame.
    6. Location is Spring, Texas.
    7. I will add this information on the website. Thank you for the heads up!
