Need a KVM VPS AMD CPU in NY
Hey boys and girls!
Happy 2020!
I need a machine that will be used as a personal desktop, as my poor little laptops i5 CPU is struggling.
This will be used as a remote desktop using Ubuntu (on both server and client). It will not be abused, I will do the occasional 'make' command to compile some stuff, and will use it for browsing, etc, but nothing intensive. I will also be running VirtualBox with Mac stuff inside, needed for some of my testing, as well as android studio.
I need the following specs:
4CPU (non-dedicated of course) Ryzen or Epyc or whatever is available, as long as its a premium potassium AMD.
4-8GB RAM (I highly prefer 8GB for obvious reasons)
200+GB Storage SSD/NVME
Located within NY or somewhere south-east US. This is fairly important, as I do need to have lower latency, so things are not super laggy when using as a remote desktop. I see some good offers in LA, however that would be 70ms+ latency, so I am afraid that it will have a very negative impact on the performance for my use case.
1TB BW on 1gbps should be fine, 10gbps bonus, but not really needed tbh.
Budget - that is open, I would be fine around $20, slightly more is okay too, as I do know that AMD and storage/ram adds up to the price. Again - budget is open for offers.
1 IPv4
None of these need to be dedicated, aside from obviously the storage. I have not yet used any AMD processors, and I look forward to trying it out.
As a side note - what would be the best server to run (VNC-wise I guess) if I am about 40-50ms away from the server? Anyone have any recommendations? I am planning on using nomachine server/client, would that work for me?

Sir @t0ny0 what about Utah?
4 CPU Core EPYC
8 GB Ram
100 GB NVMe Disk
10 TB Bandwidth
1 IPv4
$18.99 per month but with 20% off it's $15.19 per month.
Edit: Nevermind I just saw the NVMe requirement
Hey sir!
I mean if I can stack that - then I am getting the needed storage and a whole lot of CPU and RAM for $30ish, which is pretty badass, if possible.
@t0ny0 that is from https://bandithost.com/ @Delong can the good sir stack two VMs into one?
I just tested - its 70ms away from me, so that might be too high for my use case :-(
Seems like NY and TX are the closest ones to me that are usually under 50ms latency
Ah well that is a shame
Well there is NexusBytes @seriesn is also prem.
What's up boss! 8ms away from queens

Check out the plans and please let me know if any of them tickles your pickle and I will see what I can do for you
Our NY (New Year :lol) promo is still on going, if you stack that up with the regular annual payment discount, you have plenty of wiggle room .
Shoot me a PM if anything else. Join the family !
@Jord Thanks for the mention.
@t0ny0 Sure, we'd be able to stack it if you want. I'll tell you what, shoot me a PM with your requirements and I'll get something stood up for you to give it a test run to see if you could live with the 70ms~
If you need NYC though @seriesn is the go to!
Thank you! I appreciate it, but I won't be able to make do with the latency. I will keep you in mind for soon, as I might need some machines in Utah :-)
I am about to PM you sir :-) Time to finally join the family! :-)
Prem panda as always, sir! :-)
Alright, got myself a nice little beast from @seriesn and here is a bench on that badboy:
I have never ever owned a desktop as fast as this "little" guy :P
Wow very prem indeed sir @t0ny0 glad @seriesn has been able to look after you
Dear t0ny0,
No. You will NOT be able to find anything within the $20 range for 4 Ryzen CPUs.
James B. Peach
Dear James B. Peach,
I did, and even got another providers offer, which I will make use of at a later time.
Hows your search for unmetered bandwidth vps for $2 going?
With Warmest Regards,
Cherry C. Poppins
I felt like a teenager laughing at this lmao.
How's the VirtualBox going? I hear it'll be extremely slow if you don't have vmx flag.
Also, how can you get "Mac stuff" into VirtualBox? I hear it requires the host machine to be Apple hardware.
I created a VM with the same CPU and RAM specs on my Ryzen 5 2600X desktop to bench for comparison and the results speak for themselves: https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/compare/15096550?baseline=15097597
Prem indeed.
@yoursunny - on amd CPUs the
svm
flag is key for virtualization (analogous tovmx
on intel)been a good while since I messed around with teh hackintosh but seems like amd may indeed be more grist for that mill
Both awesome choices!
You were right, Mac doesn't work on the latest Ryzens... I am not yet giving up on making it work on it, but I think I have tried absolutely all guides out there, and it just won't work..
Fyi - amd-v was enabled on my machine :-)
Well actually... I'm pretty sure Shaneee still does the AMD patched XNUs
@t0ny0 Quinn did this with a Ryzen 3900x, but wasn't virtualised. But you never know this might point you in the right direction.
How the F** is AMD-V disabled, but you're running KVM? More a question for @seriesn
He enabled it for me, and bumped me up to 10Gbps. Easily the most badass PC-lookalike ive ever used lol
Nice! Zen arch AMDs are the shit!
