Can't access Webmin/Virtualmin?

Sorry guys, I am a newb but I know the members here are server pros so please be patient.
I have a basic VPS server running centos 7, I got a guy to set it up with webmin.
I am using it as a mail server, I installed a mailing app on the mail. subdomain and set it as an A name whilst the main domain is also on an A name pointing to my hosting site.

Before I changed to both A names, the mail. was CNAME to domain.com and the domain.com was A name to the VPS - with no site just the mail software.

Now I can't access the webmin control panel using domain.com:10000 - what am I doing wrong?

It's really confusing me. I tried VPSIP:10000 and I get ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED

Please help!

Thanks

Is your webmin running? Then you better go catch it!

No, seriously, check if the webmin is running or not and unblock or disable your firewall temporarily to access it in case the firewall was not configured by virtualmin installer.

    /etc/init.d/webmin restart

  • I tried that, same problem
    Stopping Webmin server in /usr/libexec/webmin
    Starting Webmin server in /usr/libexec/webmin

  • what is your current a record for domain.com?

  • ssh tunnel on localhost:10000 - see if you can connect?

  • It is running centos7, I just googled and saw this
    systemctl disable firewalld
Didn't initially work via domain.com:10000, also IP:100000 didn't work but https://ip:100000 did work.
Does this mean I have to do something with the firewall?
    Thanks

It is pointed to my wordpress host install

newsletter.domain.com is pointed to the VPS and I setup an A record for that

I don't know what that means, I found this: https://docs.bitnami.com/bch/faq/get-started/access-ssh-tunnel/ is that it?

  • Try disabling the firewall to check if its blocking the port. If it works, re-enable the firewall and open the ports.

    Yes.

Also, did you have an ssl cert set up. Sounds like you may have a problem here if you can access via https:ip:10000.

At first, webmin always works with https. If you want to access webmin in non-secure url, then, edit /etc/webmin/miniserv.conf and change ssl=1 to ssl=0 (don't forget to restart webmin after the change).
This is for accessing webmin via your ip. If you want to access it via domain, then, point a subdomain (e.g. webmin.example.com) to the server without filtering by something like a cdn or cloudflare. If you have ssl for the original domain (e.g. example.com), be sure that this subdomain for webmin does not rely on this ssl, or you'll get an error.

No, not at all. This is the normal behavior of webmin, by default uses ssl. And it is more common to access it via ip WITH https://, than via domain (again, with https://).
From your questions, I guess that your knowledge is close to zero. Are you sure that you want to use webmin/virtualmin to host your website? This panel is not for newbies like you, there is a need for deep linux and hosting knowledge to use and maintain it.
Better try something like hestia/myvestacp, keyhelp or froxlor that are simpler and easier for you to use.

I have an SSL by Lets Encrypt

  • My knowledge with Linux is a big fat 0. I got this setup to host a Mailwizz mail server. After getting it setup with the software on my OVH vps, I needed to go back in and tinker a bit.
Thanks for the suggestions, I will try one of those on another VPS to see how it goes.
Thank you for your patience and replies.

You're already learning by doing. Best way to learn in my opinion.
As I said - If you can ssh tunnel on localhost:10000 - you should be able to connect this way no problem. Check your ssl settings in Webmin - I still think your problem lies there  If you had an SSL cert form lets encrypt set up already as you say and started tinkering with DNS records afterwards? not a good Idea.

Don't use webmin/virtualmin for that. In fact, do not use a vps for custom mail server if you do not know how to handle it. Mail server is one of the hardest things to keep maintained. It will be difficult to achieve decent score to be able to send successfully mails and it will be easy to get compromised if you do not have the knowledge to secure, monitor and maintain the server.
If you want a legitimate mail campaign, then, either use a respected shared hosting (for limited volumes of mail sending) or, better use a paid mail campaign service

  • I got rid of that mailserver and I want to use the 2 Virmach servers I bought in the BF deals. I was looking around for a free or very cheap cPanel type package to manage a few domains for WP installs. I think Webmin would be too difficult for me to manage.

Froxlor was mentioned in this thread, considering that. Any recommendations for Zesle? Seems to be a cheap paid alternative. I searched the forum, no mentions since 2018 - maybe because it's too basic for you guys.

TBH Zesle looks easier to install and get going.
    Thanks
